Since we’re celebrating Holy Cross Day this Sunday, we’ll miss the gospel reading from Mark 8:27-38 for Proper 19 that we would normally be hearing and listening to a reading from the gospel of John instead. The John passage, as you might expect, talks about the cross. But interestingly enough, the Mark passage that we’re missing is also a story about the cross – it’s Jesus’ famous admonition to his disciples to “take up their cross” and follow him. It’s one of those teachings referred to as the “hard sayings” of Jesus, since it presents a difficult path to follow.
Preceding this admonition, we hear an even more shocking rebuke from Jesus. He has asked his disciples, “who do you say that I am?”, and Peter has correctly named him as Messiah. However, when Peter finds out just what Jesus’ understanding of the Messiah entails (i.e. Suffering and death), he takes him aside and tries to correct him. And here we get Jesus’ infamously harsh reply – “Get behind me, Satan!”
This might strike us as a pretty mean thing to say to one of your friends! Is Jesus really calling Peter the Devil? But when we look at the original meaning of the name, it starts to make more sense. The Hebrew word “ha-satan” means “the accuser”. Think of the story of Job, where “the Satan” falsely accuses Job of fleeting loyalty to God. It’s not so much the personification of evil as it is the spirit of self-doubt, of questioning one’s adequacy, of shame.
Shame is a powerful and insidious force. Imagine what would have happened if Peter had successfully shamed Jesus from following his true calling as the Messiah?
Peter’s rebuke of Jesus didn’t come from a place of wickedness or intentionally trying to foil God’s plans. But it did come from a place of ignorance – he was unable to see the bigger picture of how God was working in the world. How often do we shame or are we shamed by others with “good intentions” that end up sidetracking us from being who we are truly called to be?
Jesus reminds Peter to set his mind not on human things but on divine things. How can we learn to see things from God’s perspective, and not let our vision become clouded by shame, self-doubt, or judgment? By doing so, we might be able to find and help others to find our unique paths to following Jesus with all of our heart, mind, soul, and strength.
In Christ,
Brian+

Blessing of the Animals
Sunday, September 29, 2024
9:20am at Holy Cross
| |
|
Sunday, September 29th, in honor of St. Francis, (who's feast day is on October 4th), our liturgy will include the annual Blessing of the Animals.
This service is always a wonderful celebration of God's great and diverse creation! Come give thanks for all creatures of our Lord. You are invited to bring your beloved pets* to church to receive God's blessing. All creatures great and small are invited. Please make sure all animal friends are on a leash, in a crate, or otherwise secured.
Our seating will be structured a bit different to accommodate our animal friends. The pet zone for the service will be on the lanai. The "fur free" /non-allergen section of seating will be inside the bay doors.
Help spread the word to your neighbors, friends and family; invite them to what may likely be a howling and purring celebration of God's great and diverse creation.
* bring a picture of your beloved pet for a blessing if you are not able to actually bring your pet to the service.

Aligning Values with Votes
By: EDSD Coalition of Voter Advocates
As people of faith, we are called to engage thoughtfully and prayerfully in the political process. Voting is a way to express our hope for a better future, where the needs of the vulnerable are addressed, and policies promoting the well-being of all are uplifted. In this election, let us reflect on the teachings that guide our lives—values like love, justice, and mercy—allowing them to inform our decisions.
Participating in the democratic process as a way to live out our values and faith is vital. Voting is a powerful tool for shaping the future of our communities, allowing us to advocate for justice, peace, and the dignity of every person–our values. Read More

Courageous Love Campaign: Exceeding Expectations
By: Jason Evans, Canon for Mission
At our diocese’s 50th anniversary, Bishop Susan introduced the Courageous Love campaign, a $2.5 million fundraising effort aligned with our strategic plan. This campaign focuses on three goals: strengthening congregations, serving our neighbors, and growing the church. As we close out the first year, the results have already exceeded expectations, with resources being reinvested into our communities.
A year ago, Bishop Susan commissioned two new church plants. Today, St. Brigid’s in Oceanside and Resurrection in Ocean Beach are thriving examples of what can happen when we courageously love our neighbors. Both communities have launched regular worship services, and under the leadership of the Rev. Brian Petersen, St. Brigid’s has baptized and confirmed new members into their growing community.
