Friends of Five Creeks volunteers remove invasive plants from shorebird habitat in Eastshore State Park.
PARTNER SPOTLIGHT: Friends of Five Creeks
Friends of Five Creeks mobilizes East Bay volunteers to care for creeks and watersheds from Berkeley to Richmond. At one of their project sites, at the mouth of Strawberry Creek in Eastshore State Park, volunteers are protecting important habitat for shorebirds by controlling perennial pepperweed that could take over the area. Volunteers have also removed invasive ice plant, pampas grass, and French broom at the site.
Thanks to these volunteers, native plants are rebounding at the site. F5C volunteers have helped replant many natives, while a Boy Scout troup, as their Eagle Scout project, built steps at the site to reduce erosion. F5C Weekday Weed Warriors also help the East Bay Regional Park District maintain the nearby Berkeley Meadow by spotting, mapping, and removing invasive stinkwort, and prepare the newly restored Brickyard area to the south for a 2019 opening by preventing the comeback pampas grass, French broom, and other invasive plants.
