Sustainability House: A Living-Learning Laboratory
Sunlight in every room - Direct access to our Greenhouse neighbors - Space to grow and include more of the community - A place to display sustainable living - These are just a few of the highlights of the Office of Sustainability's new space. At the start of the Spring 2015 semester, we had the opportunity to move into what once was the Patterson House.
What keeps you from commuting to and around UCCS? Sweating? The Austin Bluffs hill? Weather? Time? As of October 2014, the barrier of limited bike infrastructure has been removed. UCCS has been recognized as a bronze Bicycle Friendly University by the League of American Bicyclists.
This February marks the beginning of the fifth annual Campus Conservation Nationals competition to reduce energy and water use on college campuses across the nation. This year will be UCCS's third year participating in the competition, and the Office of Sustainability is really working to get everyone in the residence halls involved and educated.
As sustainability culture on campus grows, so does our office. Along with our new residence, we've had quite a shift in personnel. With three full-time staff and over a dozen student employees, we're practically bursting at the seams!
The Green Action Fund (GAF) was created to reduce the ecological footprint of UCCS and promote sustainable environmental, social and economic values through a variety of student-sponsored projects. The GAF Committee is comprised of only students with one faculty and staff advisor. The committee reviews, rates and approves projects with the intent of creating a more sustainable campus culture.
