Summer is coming!
How many hours of daylight do we get on the summer solstice?
In the Northern Hemisphere, the length of daylight varies depending on the latitude. At the equator, the time from sunrise to sunset is about 12 hours. At temperate or mid-northern latitudes (approximately 40 degrees north) the length of daylight lasts about 15 hours. And for those who are north of the Arctic Circle (66.5 degrees north) the sun remains above the horizon for 24 hours.

SBCCOG Enrolls South Bay School Districts in Money- and Energy-Saving Program | |
|
The South Bay Cities Council of Governments (SBCCOG) has been working hard to enroll South Bay school districts in the SoCalREN so that students and teachers get access to energy- and money-saving facility upgrades.
Congratulations to Lennox Elementary School District for enrolling in the program!
The district joins the El Segundo Unified School District, Los Angeles Unified School District, Redondo Beach Unified School District and Torrance Unified School District as enrolled districts in the South Bay.
SoCalREN provides public agencies resources to identify and incentivize energy efficiency projects such as lighting, heating and air conditioning, water heaters and more.

Attend West Basin’s
Final 2024 Water Lab Events

West Basin Municipal Water District (West Basin) invites you to join the final three 2024 Water Lab events. Water Lab is a public education program that provides opportunities to learn about our Southern California water supply, tour the Edward C. Little Water Recycling Facility (ECLWRF), and discover what West Basin is doing to help people conserve water and save money.
All three Water Lab events take place at Edward C. Little Water Recycling Facility (ECLWRF) and are free to the public. You can view the full program schedule and register at www.westbasin.org/free-water-programs.
Remaining 2024 Water Lab Events
Know Your H2O Classes (6-8 p.m.): In-person classes take place at the ECLWRF in El Segundo. You will get an in-depth look at a wide range of current and emerging water topics and discover what can be done to save more water in our day-to-day activities. Free parking and dinner are provided while supplies last.

Join Metro's "Adopt a Bike" Program | |

Thousands of unclaimed bikes are sent to Metro’s lost and found every year. These bicycles are left on Metro’s bus and rail systems and properties. Previously, many of these bikes would go unclaimed and were sold off at auction.
Now with Metro Adopt A Bike, bikes go back into the hands of the community and those most in need.

Rolling into the Future
Tiny Car Enters U.S. Market
The popular Eli ZERO microcar is coming to the United States. Folks can reserve the vehicle today with a $200 refundable deposit.
At a 90-mile range, 25-mph top speed, and just 88 inches in length, the two-seater vehicle is designed to transform urban trips and short commutes. In fact, nearly four Eli ZERO cars can fit in a single standard parking spot. However, owners can still experience many of the same features of a normal car, including rearview camera, heating and AC, trunk space, Bluetooth speakers, and CarPlay and Android Auto.
New micromobility innovations and technologies are constantly emerging from around the world. We want to showcase some of these exciting vehicle inventions in the industry. Perhaps you’ll spot one of these devices cruising around the South Bay in the near future.

SBCCOG Partners with SoCalREN to Reward Elementary Students in Hawthorne for Energy Efficiency | |

Five Zela Davis Elementary School Classrooms Receive Grants Totaling $5,000
Third and fourth-grade students from Zela Davis Elementary School in Hawthorne celebrated their school’s earnings with a special assembly for helping their families become more energy-efficient at home.
The Southern California Regional Energy Network (SoCalREN) partnered with the South Bay Cities Council of Governments (SBCCOG) to introduce students to new energy efficiency tools through the SoCalREN’s Kits for Kids program.
Students were asked to perform an interactive scavenger hunt to receive the items at no cost to help their families cut energy and water use, while saving money and improving their comfort and safety. Such items included LED light bulbs, night lights, efficient-flow showerheads and faucet aerators to install at home. Classrooms were eligible to receive a $1,000 grant after 65% of students installed the energy-saving items. Five participating classrooms at the school met the goal.
Through the partnership a total of 12 South Bay classrooms received grants of $1,000 each ($12,000 total) for taking energy-saving actions at home. Read more about the program and how to enroll.

Project Coordinator — Housing Location Coordinator
The SBCCOG Homeless Services is seeking candidates for a Housing Location Coordinator to support SBCCOG member cities and Homeless Case Managers in identifying housing opportunities and resources such as Client Aid and Time Limited Subsidies. The Housing Location Coordinator will function similarly to a traditional Housing Navigator, but without direct client interaction.
