Greetings Ospreys,
It was great to see so many students from every grade attend last Friday's
Ospreys on Ice event at Chapman Hill. Congratulations to the Student Council for organizing such a successful event and thanks to
Steamworks,
Fuzziwigs and
Beads & Beyond for donating to our prize drawing.
It's been a big week for service to others, with the student ambassador team supporting the
Hospice of Mercy annual fundraiser and the class of 2021 partnering with multiple organizations for
Sophomore Inspire Week. Sophomores worked with
Local First,
Durango Nature Studies,
San Juan Mountain Association,
Durango Young Progressives,
La Plata Open Space Conservancy,
The Maker Lab at the Powerhouse and
Manna Soup Kitchen, honing job skills and giving back to the community that supports our school in so many ways. Across the board, we were proud of all the positive feedback we received from these agencies about our students, who they described as hard-working, mature, helpful and articulate--of course!
Next week, we bring learning beyond our classroom walls for all students.
Osprey Week, which we like to think of as a
week on, not a week off, will have staff and students exploring a variety of interested side-by-side. Our first Osprey Week group has already traveled to the animal refuge in Costa Rica (after a somewhat epic journey that included half the group driving to Phoenix and laying over in Miami after flights were cancelled!) and another group leaves tomorrow morning to packraft in the canyons near Lake Powell. On Monday morning, we'll have groups travelling to Albuquerque, Ghost Ranch, Moab, Denver, Indian Creek, St. George and several local sites, too. Ospreys will be cooking, making art, mountain biking, backpacking, canyoneering, crafting and more. View all key details, including packing lists and itineraries
here and please reach out to staff leaders with questions. Campus will be open throughout the week during regular school hours, and Bridget and Libby will be available to help in any way.
The Hub Bus between DHS and AHS will run but we will NOT be offering catered lunch next week.
As a reminder, please complete registration for next year this weekend if you have not yet done so, and submit it by Monday. Libby sent out information about registration this past Monday; email her if you did not receive it or need it again.
There are a handful of spots available for juniors in the SAT prep class that we'll offer free-of-charge April 1 and 8. The class will meet at 4:00 on campus those two days, providing a bit of extra test preparation before juniors take the SAT on April 9. Please email Sean for more information.
Finally, we hope to see you TONIGHT at
Nini's Taqueria for
Ospreys Dining Out! Grab your friends and family for a Friday night meal and support AHS with your purchase.
Enjoy the weekend and thanks for all you do to help the Ospreys soar!

We are excited to announce that
Dave Farkas
will be joining our math department next fall! Dave attended Prescott College, Fort Lewis College, the University of British Columbia and Semmelweis Medical School and has taught at Mountain Middle School, Bayfield High School and Miller Middle School, in addition to working as a kayaking, skiing and climbing guide. Many of our students are thrilled to have another chance to have Dave in their educational lives.
"For 18 years I've been teaching science and mathematics in the area, always moving forward using a growth mindset to push my pedagogy and approach with students further. When I found project-based education I realized that this is where I wanted to focus my efforts and AHS fits perfectly into my philosophy. AHS is also where a lot of friends work, former students learn, and where my life partner works, changing students' lives everyday. It's a place the nurtures the whole student and somewhere that I want to be!"

Julian Springer
will also be joining our math department in the fall and we look forward to welcoming him aboard. Julian is currently enrolled in the Masters of Education program at Fort LewisCollege and has been student teaching at Escalante Middle School and Big Picture High School. Julian grew up in Nepal and China and graduated from Colorado College. He has been an expedition guide in Green River, Utah and a ski coach in Crested Butte.
"As a former coach and guide, I am ecstatic to be continuing my career in education as a math teacher with the AHS team! I am honored to have been chosen to join their amazing faculty. As both a father and a teacher I am ready to push myself to be the most impactful educator I can be, and excited to help my students achieve to their greatest potential. I cannot wait for the fall semester to begin!"
