Greetings Ospreys,
Congratulations to Dr. Jesse Hutt, AHS co-founder, board member and parent, named
Charter School Advocate of the Year
by the
Colorado League of Charter Schools
today in Denver! We are so very grateful for Jesse's vision, her tireless support of school choice and her ongoing dedication to ensuring the future success of Animas High School. Jesse is so deserving of this recognition and we are thrilled that she has received it. Please be sure to send your congratulations and appreciations to her at
jesse.hutt@animashighschool.com.
Many thanks to those who joined us for the
Osprey Parent Coffee this morning. It was a great conversation and heartwarming to hear so much positive feedback from parents. We will hold one more Osprey Parent Coffee before the year's end; stay tuned for the date.
Sophomores in Shane Nelson's Humanities classes met veteran, naturalist, writer and film maker Doug Peacock this afternoon to enrich their study of Ed Abbey's classic Southwestern novel
The Monkey Wrench Gang. Abbey's character George Hayduke was modeled after Peacock, who is in town for the
Durango Independent Film Festival. The students appreciated this unique opportunity to speak with Peacock and they had thoughtful, excellent questions for him.
We will send registration materials to all new and returning students on Monday, our enrollment lottery date. Please be sure to complete registration by Monday March 18 to hold your spot for the 2019-20 school year!
Ninth graders will have their monthly
Career Exploration Day on Wednesday morning, visiting professional sites in STEM, design and information technology fields. The week after next is
Sophomore Inspire Week, where students will focus on career and college readiness during their core classes and engage in community projects with local nonprofits.
Students will meet in their
Osprey Week groups Wednesday during Advisory and we will send a letter out that same day that will include all Osprey Week itineraries, packing lists, meeting locations, etc. Please note that Wednesday is the deadline for all medications to be turned in to the main office. Osprey Week is March 18 through 22.
Student-Led Conferences are Wednesday afternoon, and are required for all 9th and 10th grade families. Please be sure you have signed up for your time slot:
Juniors who have not yet confirmed LINK Internships or are struggling academically will also be required to complete an SLC; these will be scheduled with Steve Smith and students are responsible for communicating SLC time to parents.
Please note that professional dress is required for SLCs.
All seniors and families should plan to attend next Thursday's
Graduation Meeting from 5:30 to 6:30 to learn important details about graduation week events, cap & gown orders, ticketing for the graduation ceremony and more.
Friday of next week, the AHS Student Council is hosting
Ospreys on Ice Disco Night at the Chapman Hill Ice Arena from 7:30 to 9:00. Admission is $6 and includes skate rental.
Looking ahead to April, our 9th graders will travel to the
Biosphere 2 in Arizona April 3 through 5 in conjunction with their
Space Settlement Film Project. Look for a letter on Monday with more details.
The
AHS Prom will be Friday, April 19 at the Elks Club. The students organizing prom would like to know if we have any Osprey parents who are Elks Club members, so that they might get a member rate and keep ticket costs low. Please reach out to Libby if you can help.
Finally, we want our community to be aware of legislation proposed in the Colorado House that would negatively impact charter schools like ours who are chartered through the
Colorado Charter School Institute. Please read more and, if you are inclined to speak up, do so
here. Equitable funding for charter schools is important for our students--and all communities in Colorado!
Enjoy the weekend and thanks for all you do to help the Ospreys soar!
