Greetings Ospreys,

There truly is nothing quite like end-of-year All School Exhibition, and this year's was among the best we've ever hosted in our school's history. Last night's event was a celebration of what happens when you empower young adults to be partners in their learning, inviting them to help envision what it might look like to design, create and implement a creative showcase that engages the audience. Musical performances, salsa tastings and Spanish language storytime nooks, shadow puppet plays and a full-blown Energy Museum, thoughtful panel conversations and an educational cancer clinic--the event had a little bit of everything, and a whole lot of student work that was professional and impressive.

Congratulations, Ospreys, for the hard work and collaboration that went into creating an evening that made us all feel proud of our school. Thank you to our community for your probing questions and curiosity, which pushed students to be their best!

We missed the class of 2025 last night, as they were not exhibiting since they are out in the field wrapping up their three-week LINK Internships. We've loved continuing to get reports from the field, and visiting with those whose job sites are closer to home. We have juniors across the country, including Ruby Hamilton who is interning at the University of Rhode Island Couple and Family Therapy Clinic and Gabe Minot-Mathy, who is in the San Francisco Bay Area interning at Google. Kira Lemley reported from Gilero in North Carolina, a medical device engineering firm, that they are doing plenty of hands-on lab work including simulating altitude and testing the seal integrity of a pre-filled syringe, as shown in the photo above. Closer to home, Rose Hinds is enjoying her time at Turtle Lake Refuge's Café, preparing locally grown, wild harvest and living foods.

Finley Jeansonne's coverage of the Where the Stars Collide Music Festival in today's Durango Herald, "Animas High School students launch music festival," is a great bit of cross-polination, as this junior intern's latest story highlights Des Tsosie and Julian Dugas' work putting the festival on for their Senior Project. The event starts this afternoon at 11th Street and continues tomorrow at Santa Rita Park, with several current AHS students and AHS alumnae performing. Hope to see you there!

Coming Up Next Week

Ospreys have been sharpening their talons for a new old form of combat for XBlock!

The Swordfighting XBlock, taught by Osprey dad Colin Roy-Ehri and supervised by our own Head of School Rebecca Ruland, has been training students in the wonders of historical European Martial Arts. This class covers combat forms from 13th to 17th century Europe.

“I've always fought with swords as a kid, and I wanted to get involved with Riva’s school, so I asked her what would be best to teach, and she immediately chose swordfighting!” Colin explained.

Students are learning techniques from Fiore dei Liberi and Hans Talhoffer and practicing HEMA dueling with each other. They are also mastering “chess” (not the board game!), a form of practicing patterns and predictions in combat, and early manual survival tactics in the period.

Senior Cooper Sakadinsky enthusiastically shared: “Swordfighting is a little bit like--you know how you dream about having a bouncy castle to yourself or ‘what if they taught us magic in school?’--I remember when I was like- five or something- I would always daydream about how much cooler school would be if they just taught us sword fighting moves and cool things like that. For the most part I had let go of that dream but lo and behold in my final year it becomes a reality, and unlucky me only gets to experience it in my LAST year… regardless, its a dream come true!”

Freshperson and swordfighter Riva Roy-Ehri shared, “It’s really cool! You get to play with swords and pretend to be an action hero from the Middle Ages. It’s one of the most interesting XBlocks. You get to duel people not to the death!”

Colin hopes to continue the XBlock into the future, so Ospreys will have many more chances to try their hand at medieval martial arts!

PS: we LOVE it when parents and families want to get involved! Reach out to libby.cowles@animashighschool.com if you have an idea about how you'd like to plug in!
