There is no place like the Hub City for the holidays. Count on New Brunswick City Center to provide all the magic behind the curtain for the New Brunswick Winter Wonderland.
As a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the central business district as a great place to live, work and visit, City Center coordinates the holiday bustle all around the downtown.
“New Brunswick has transformed into a holiday destination with City Center merchants getting into the festive spirit with beautiful decorations and terrific specials,” said Executive Director Pamela Stefanek. “I tell everyone I see: come celebrate the holiday season with us!”
After a tremendous kick-off during the annual tree lighting on Dec. 2, the city’s Winter Wonderland extravaganza is a month-long celebration that culminates with New Year’s Eve shows, dining specials and fireworks over the rooftop of the Heldrich Hotel.
Miracle on George Street is happening until Dec. 31 at Catherine Lombardi restaurant and Stage Left Steak, at 3-5 Livingston Ave. The eateries have transformed into Santa’s Outpost with an over-the-top décor of lights, garlands, ribbons, and tchotchkes. Celebrate the season with a festive menu of amazing, signature cocktails and delicious food.
“There’s still time to schedule that holiday party or New Year’s Eve gathering to celebrate the end of the year in style in New Brunswick,” Stefanek said. “New Brunswick is the perfect place for a business event over the holidays.”
Coming up soon is the NAACP annual community celebration of Kwanzaa on December 29, hosted from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the New Brunswick Performing Arts Center 3rd Floor exhibition area.
Enjoy the Museum of the American Hungarian Foundation’s 33rd-annual Festival of Trees until Jan. 7. This year’s exhibit expands outside the museum at 300 Somerset St. and into the City Center. Inside the New Brunswick Performing Arts Center are trees representing Irish, New Brunswick, Hungarian, & Latin American communities. At Amboy Bank, 350 George St., there is a tree representing Greece.
New Brunswick has become the prime destination in Central Jersey to ring in the new year, Stefanek said, inviting everyone to spend the last night of the year with hours of live music, fireworks and those midnight toasts. The Restaurant Guys are once again hosting the well-renowned Fireworks Spectacular at Monument Square Park, across from Catherine Lombardi and Stage Left Steak.
There are also a variety of world-class shows to celebrate the new year, including an evening of comedy with Caroline Rhea at the New Brunswick Performing Arts Center, the Salute to Vienna New Year’s Eve Concert at State Theatre, and the New Year's Eve Extravaganza with Rocky Dale Davis at the Stress Factory.
From home decor to tailored clothing to footwear, from fashion accessories and fine jewelry to fun, one-of-a-kind items, there’s plenty of small businesses carrying quality items you’ll only find in New Brunswick. If you can’t decide on the right gift, then try a gift card from one of the many stores, restaurants and theaters in City Center, so your loved ones can continue to celebrate into 2023.
“With the holiday season in full swing, it's more important than ever to keep our local businesses top of mind when tackling our holiday shopping,” Stefanek said. “Shopping locally is vital to growing our community's economy and ensuring a happy holiday for all.”
