NEWS: The Next 150 has inked a significant deal with Shell Environmental Products aimed at accelerating the adoption of biochar technology. Under their 5-year agreement, the biochar producer will supply Shell with carbon removal credits of up to 22,500 generated from its large-scale facility in Mexico. This agreement represents one of the first transactions involving carbon removal credits from Mexico’s largest biochar project.
The Next 150 also signed a six-year purchase agreement with Microsoft to supply 95,000 tons of high-quality Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) credits produced by its General Biochar Systems (GBS) business unit's first biochar plant in Guanajuato, Mexico.
NEWS: German climate-tech company Novocarbo has raised $27 million USD in growth funding to launch Carbon Removal Parks across Europe to drive decarbonization. Through Biochar Carbon Removal (BCR) technology, these parks produce climate-neutral heat.
OPPORTUNITY: The Spanish Biomass Association, organizer of the International Bioenergy Congress 2024, together with its technological partner, the Spanish Biogas Association, invites researchers, academics, and professionals from the sector to present their papers for the next edition of the congress. This year, under the slogan "Renewable gases, the great allies in the Spanish economy defossilization," they want to explore and delve into the fundamental role that renewable gases play in the energy transition and environmental sustainability. Deadline is 15 May.
NEWS: IBI member NetZero – a leading biochar production company – announced a new investment agreement reached as part of French President Emmanuel Macron ‘s state visit in Brazil. The company has signed a deal with STOA – a French infrastructure and impact fund – for 18 million euros ($19.4 million) to expand biochar production in tropical areas.
RESOURCE: The Australia New Zealand Biochar Industry Group (ANZBIG) has launched their Farmer's Guide to the Production and Application of Biochar — a resource several years in the making. The publication collects the experience of people like gardeners, farmers, and researchers who have made and used biochar to produce food crops in home gardens, smallholdings, and farms in many countries around the world.
NEWS: US developer and IBI member Oregon Biochar Solutions has started offering the first biochar carbon removal (BCR) credits underwritten by an insurance policy in a bid to provide further confidence to buyers.
OPPORTUNITY: The preliminary round of US producer biochar tests are just wrapping up but the Biochar Atlas team needs more biochar to test! USBI is encouraging all interested US biochar producers to participate — Biochar Atlas analysis results are accepted for use with the Code 336 program! NEWS: IBI member Biochar Life and Siam Cement Group (SCG) Cement and Building Materials Business announced a landmark Memorandum of Understanding to collaboratively explore and develop biochar-infused cement and other sustainable building materials.

FEATURE: A new report published by the European Biochar Industry Consortium (EBI) explores the science behind biochar as a durable carbon dioxide removal (CDR) pathway. Titled ‘Report on Permanence of Biochar’, the paper focuses on the recent findings of two scientific papers from scientific teams led by Hamed Sanei and Elias Azzi on the ability of biochar to store CO2 over very long periods of time.
EBI also released their European Biochar Market Report for 2023/2024!
NEWS: Senken, an on-chain carbon credit exchange based on verified climate projects, and Exomad Green announced they striked an offtake agreement for the supply of 81,600 tonnes of biochar carbon removal credits between 2025 and 2028.
OPPORTUNITY: In February, the US Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management (FECM) announced up to $100 million to help develop a commercially viable carbon dioxide removal industry in the United States. This includes opportunity for biochar projects.
NEWS: Planboo and Sustainable Travel International announced their new collaboration to boost carbon removals. As part of the partnership, Sustainable Travel International’s travelers will have the opportunity to support Planboo’s biochar projects that will now become part of the company’s Climate Impact Portfolio.
Planboo also announced a new partnership with Omiti Biochar, an initiative in Namibia, titled "From Bush to Biochar" that aims to produce biochar from encroacher bush, with a focus on community partnerships.
