Community Leader
Ed Pettit
We are delighted to shine a spotlight on Ed Pettitt, a resident of Third Ward since 2011, whose dedication to public health and environmental justice is making an impact on the community. Originally from Buffalo, NY, Pettitt's journey to Third Ward began after his service as an HIV/AIDS volunteer with the Peace Corps in Botswana. Driven by his passion for public health, he pursued a Master's degree at the University of Texas School of Public Health while working with the Baylor International Pediatric AIDS Initiative at Texas Children's Hospital. His experience and expertise in this field set the stage for his impactful work in Third Ward. As a Graduate Research Assistant with the Bullard Center for Environmental and Climate Justice at Texas Southern University, he actively contributes to advancing environmental justice in the community. Additionally, his role as Vice President of the Greater Third Ward Super Neighborhood #67 showcases his commitment to the neighborhood's growth and well-being. Pettitt's leadership extends further as the Founder of Friends of Columbia Tap, an organization focused on developing the trail as a linear park and African-American Heritage Corridor. Collaborating with storyteller and activist Naomi Carrier, Pettitt is ensuring that the community's rich history is cherished and shared.
Ed has successfully spearheaded transformative initiatives that have reshaped the landscape of Third Ward. One notable project is the creation of the 3rd Ward Chess Park. Through his leadership, Pettitt mobilized community members and stakeholders, including the National Urban Chess Association, to bring this unique public space to life. The Chess Park not only provides a recreational outlet but also serves as a gathering place for people of all ages and backgrounds, fostering social connections and intellectual stimulation. Furthermore, Pettitt's determination and advocacy resulted in the conversion of a city-owned illegal dumpsite into the Third Ward University Village's first public park. This remarkable transformation not only addressed the environmental concerns associated with the dumpsite but also provided the community with a safe and welcoming green space. This park is now under construction to add playground equipment funded by the Kinder Foundation so that it continues to serve as a hub for outdoor activities, community events, and a source of pride for Third Ward residents. Pettitt's ability to rally support, leverage resources, and turn vision into reality exemplifies his commitment to creating sustainable and accessible spaces within the community.
Pettitt serves on the boards of the U.S. Department of State IREX Community Solutions Program, the Baylor College of Medicine Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Partnering for Peace, a collaboration between the U.S. Peace Corps and Rotary International. This summer, Pettitt embarks on two significant research fellowships: the Brookhaven National Lab Environmental Justice Internship and the Houston Advanced Research Center (HARC) Leading with Equity in Adaptation Practice (LEAP) Program. Through these opportunities, he will be developing a renewable energy community microgrid and disaster resiliency hub for Cuney Homes, Texas Southern University, and the Third Ward community.
When he's not working on community activism, Pettitt finds solace in outdoor activities. Exploring Houston's trails, camping, and indulging in plein air watercolor painting are some of the ways he recharges his spirit. Ed Pettitt is a true champion for environmental and climate justice in Third Ward. His unwavering dedication, leadership, and collaborative spirit have paved the way for transformative projects and initiatives. We are fortunate to have him as an advocate for our community, and we eagerly anticipate the positive impact he will continue to make in the future.
Thank you, ED, for serving the District D Community!

Columbia Tap Trail Safety Coverage
We are aware of the recent safety issues that have occurred on the Columbia Tap Trail in the Third Ward Community. We have coordinated with the Houston Police Department and community stakeholders on how to render the issue and provide safety for bikers and people who use the Columbia Tap Trail on a normal basis. Our hearts go out to the cyclist who was brutally attacked, the individual who was tragically shot, and the two victims who are currently hospitalized after the incidents. Our thoughts and prayers are with them and their families during this challenging time. We want to assure the community that we are taking immediate action to address these incidents and the broader safety concerns along the trail. Increased police presence, investments in safety measures, and ongoing collaboration is actively being implemented to combat crime and create a safer quality of life. Our vision is to manage the Columbia Tap Trail as a thriving public linear park and greenway. This includes long-term solutions such as maintenance, lighting improvements, new technologies, and surveillance system upgrades to enhance safety and security. Empowering the community is a top priority. We are supporting safety education, and neighborhood awareness programs to foster resilience and a heightened sense of security.

Almeda Genoa @ Furman Community Meeting Recap
We are pleased to announce we had a successful Almeda Genoa & Furman Community Meeting that was held this past month, aimed at addressing the mobility concerns in Southeast Houston, particularly at the intersection of Almeda Genoa Road and Furman Road. The area has experienced rapid growth due to new residential developments, leading to increased vehicular traffic. In collaboration with our partners at the Houston Public Works Transportation and Drainage Operations Department, led by Khang Nguyen, we have been diligently addressing mobility issues. The meeting provided an opportunity for community members to participate in discussions about the development of the area, with a focus on the intersection as a crucial first step. Representatives from the HPW team presented their plans for enhancing mobility, drainage, and safety at this intersection, which include the addition of traffic lights, turning lanes, ADA-compliant sidewalks, and improved drainage. We appreciate the valuable feedback from community members, and we are committed to ensuring a successful outcome. Thank you for your continued participation in addressing the mobility concerns of our community.
