Great News - The construction of Pride Parkway is now complete and the orange barrels have finally for the most part disappeared.  The next step is for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet to begin the punch list process with the contractors involved in the construction project.  The purpose of the punch list will be to itemize issues that are not compliant with the scope of the construction contract and thus in need of remediation.  The City of Taylor Mill has been invited to participate in this process and our staff along with our City Engineer will be working with the State to identify areas of concern.

Currently, the State is evaluating our continued requests for the installation of traffic signals along the new corridor in various locations.  As part of the process we have been in contact with Senator Thayer who is supporting our efforts.  Once the local branch of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet completes their ongoing traffic studies the information will be evaluated in Frankfort.  The final decision on the installation of all traffic signals comes from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, located in Frankfort, KY.  As soon as more information becomes available we will update you.  As always please drive safely and be aware of your surroundings including other motor vehicles and all pedestrians.

One of the many reasons the construction of Pride Parkway was a long term benefit to our community is the construction of sidewalks along the new corridor.  We have seen lots of people out enjoying them already and we are anxious to add to the existing sidewalk project along existing Taylor Mill Road.

As you may know, several years ago we began work on a sidewalk project near Pride Park on Taylor Mill Road going Northbound.  It was the vision of the Taylor Mill City Commission and Staff to start this sidewalk project in a northerly direction in order to some day link residents to not only Pride Park but City Hall and our local businesses.  Additionally, we knew the reconstruction of the south end of Taylor Mill Road would include sidewalks that would tie Pride Parkway to Pride Park.

As an Executive Member of the Ohio Kentucky Indiana Regional Council of Governments I petitioned and received a Safe Route to Schools Grant for sidewalks.  The 240K allocation we will receive is a combination of State and Federal monies. The funding which was awarded to us in 2013 is not available until construction year 2016.  In the meantime, design work and all the necessary studies and reports are being completed and filed by our staff.  Once completed we will begin the task of right of way acquisition and then finally construction.  The new phase of the project will pick up where the City left off near Wolf Road and continue North as far the grant monies allocated will allow for. It is important to note that the City Commission and Staff are constantly looking for and applying for available grant monies.  The sidewalk project is just one successful example of our efforts.

On behalf of myself, the other members of the Taylor Mill City Commission, our Staff, and all of our many volunteers who assist and support our agency we are happy to serve the Citizens of Taylor Mill.  Please do not hesitate to contact any of us for further information or assistance when needed.  Thank you!

Sincerely,

Daniel L. Bell, Mayor
City of Taylor Mill

Unfortunately, due to the weather conditions and other extenuating circumstances the evening events planned for Park Fest 2015 had to be canceled.

A very special thank you to all of our vendors, our volunteers, those who attended, and our staff who braved the wet weather the day of the event.  We greatly appreciate your dedication and loyalty!

Plans for Park Fest 2016 will begin soon.  Please be on the lookout for more details and the date so you can mark your calendars in advance.  Thank you.
Taylor Mill Police Department

Several months ago the Taylor Mill Police Chief along with members of the Taylor Mill City Commission and our CAO were the focus of criticism, created by a group comprised of both residents and non-residents, when we allocated funding  for the purchase of Body Worn Camera's for our Police Department.  As a result, we wanted to address the issue especially after recent events in other communities on both sides of the river and make sure that residents understand the basis for our decision.

There has been extensive studies conducted across the country in relation to the deployment of Body Worn Cameras (BWC).  As you can imagine, a major issue for all governmental agencies is the need for transparency, and there have been specific studies to address the issue about whether BWC's make an agency more transparent.  It would stand to reason however that by recording the actions of police officers the agency is opening the door to discussion about the actions of the officers thus creating more available information to the public and thus improving transparency.  Numerous practical benefits from law enforcement officers wearing BWC's include:
  • Documenting Evidence - Cameras provide evidentiary benefits, including expedited resolution of citizen complaints and lawsuits.
  • Officer Training - With capture of in the moment behavior, video presents excellent training and coaching opportunities for how best to handle an incident.
  • Preventing and Resolving Complaints Brought By Members of the Public - Improvements have been shown in both police and citizen behavior when cameras are worn in a visible location.
  • Strengthening Police Accountability - Cameras provide transparency which improve accountability and performance.

The Taylor Mill City Commission funded the BWC program at the suggestion of our Police Chief and CAO for the aforementioned reasons, and we believe BWC's will increase accountability and more importantly they will be a tool to preserve the unique relationships between our police officers and both internal and external community members.

Over the last couple months the Taylor Mill Police Department has been field testing different types of BWC's and we recently selected our preferred vendor.  We anticipate each officer being equipped with BWC's before the end of October.

The entire Taylor Mill City Commission applauds the proactive work of our staff, and we see BWC's as part of promoting safety for all who live in and visit or pass through our community.
