Shop Concord Gift Card Program Returns

Beginning on Monday, May 22, the City of Concord and the Greater Concord Chamber of Commerce are relaunching the popular Shop Concord digital gift card program! The program supports local businesses by encouraging residents to shop locally over the Memorial Day weekend and summer months.


While supplies last, receive a free $50 Shop Concord bonus card with every original $100 gift card purchase, a free $25 Shop Concord card with every $50 gift card purchase, or a free $10 Shop Concord card with every $20 gift card purchase.


The e-gift cards can be purchased on the Shop Concord Yiftee page, which includes a list of participating merchants where the cards can be redeemed. This program is free for local Concord businesses to join and interested businesses can sign up at www.concordfirst.com/shop-concord.

Council to Consider Updating Tobacco Ordinance

At its regular meeting on Tuesday, May 23, the City Council will consider updating its Tobacco Retailer License Ordinance to restrict the sale of flavored tobacco, electronic smoking devices, certain coupons and discounts for tobacco products, and to require minimum package sizes and minimum prices for cigars and cigarettes. 


The final agenda for this meeting and the complete staff report on this item will be available no later than 5 p.m. on May 19 on the City's Council agenda web page.

Construction Begins on Treat Blvd.

Construction of the Treat Boulevard Pavement Rehabilitation Project (Phase 1) – City Project No. 2559 has begun. Phase 1 of the project runs between Walnut Creek City Limits (in front of Carondelet High School) to San Miguel Road. 


Project improvements include traffic control, potholing, fiber optic conduit and cable installation for traffic signals, removal and replacement of concrete (curb, gutter, sidewalk, and curb ramps), replacement of sidewalk trees, pavement rehabilitation via full-depth reclamation (FDR) and restriping. Construction is expected be complete by the end of October 2023, weather permitting.


The general work hours are during the day between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 pm. Lane closure hours will be limited to between 7:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. in the north/eastbound direction (toward Clayton Road) and 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the south/westbound direction (toward Walnut Creek) to accommodate peak hours of traffic. There will be temporary lane closures in effect throughout the duration of the project, and delays should be expected.

Concord Announces Recruitment for Planning Commission

At its May 9 meeting, the Concord City Council announced a recruitment for the Planning Commission to fill one vacancy for the term ending February 28, 2025. Applications are due to the City Clerk by Friday, June 2, at 5 p.m.


The Planning Commission consists of five members serving four-year terms. Members must be residents of Concord and hold no other municipal office in the City of Concord. The Commission develops and maintains the General Plan of the Concord Planning Area and makes recommendations to Council regarding the General Plan.


Planning Commission members must disclose interests in investments, real property, and income derived within the City of Concord in accordance with the State of California Political Reform Act. Filings are required within 30 days of assuming the position and is done on an annual basis.

City to Host Community Meetings for Homeless Strategic Plan

As part of the information-gathering process for its Homeless Strategic Plan, the City of Concord is hosting a community meeting on Thursday, May 25 at 6 p.m. at the Willow Pass Community Center (2748 E. Olivera Rd.).


The goal of this meeting is to share information on Concord's unsheltered population, and to listen to your concerns, ideas, and feedback regarding the issue of homelessness in Concord.


The input collected from the event will help identify community goals and priorities that will inform the development of an actionable strategic plan to respond to homelessness in Concord.


A virtual community meeting covering the same topics will be held on Wednesday, May 31 at 6 p.m., and will have Spanish translation available. The meeting Zoom link can be found here. Outside of these meetings, there will be other opportunities for the community to provide input.

Recruitment Open


On May 2, the City Council amended the composition of the Homeless Strategic Plan Working Group to include one representative who is from, or who has experience working with, the LGBTQI+ community, and one representative who is an active owner or manager of a business based in Concord, and opened a recruitment for the two positions. Applications for these two positions are due to the City Clerk by Friday, May 26 at 5 p.m.


The Homeless Strategic Plan Working Group acts as an advisory body to Council, staff, and the project consultants, and meets in person once per month, at minimum, for approximately nine to 12 months to hear, discuss, and provide feedback as the strategic plan is shaped. Members are expected to attend all meetings, read all materials, and be prepared to listen and engage on the topics discussed. 


The Working Group’s first two meetings occurred on March 22 and April 24, and the next meeting is scheduled for Monday, May 22, at the Concord Senior Center, 2727 Parkside Circle, at 6 p.m. Applicants are encouraged to attend the May 22 meeting.

Concord's Got Talent

Concord's Got Talent is this Saturday, May 20 at the Concord Senior Center, 2727 Parkside Circle, beginning at 5 p.m. This funny, clever, and musical show provides the 50 & Better community the opportunity to display their talents and entertain people of all ages.


Tickets are $5 and all proceeds go towards the Concord Senior Center, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary! Tickets are sold online at www.concordreg.org. Don't miss out on all the talent in the community!

May 18 is Bike to Work Day

Put on your helmet on and pump up your tires for Bike to Work Day!


On ThursdayMay 18, participate in the 29th annual Bay Area Bike to Work Day and join other cyclists for an active, environmentally friendly commute.


Here in Concord, we will have an energizer station at Todos Santos Plaza from 8 to 10 a.m. Stop by on the way to work to recharge with water and snacks, and pick up free goodies, like a BWTD tote bag.
