How to talk about General Conference
On April 15, 2024, from 9 to 10 a.m. PT, plan to attend the one-hour Zoom presentation with the Directors of Communications from each Conference in the Western Jurisdiction, and Brenda Smotherman from UMCom, on communicating about the General Conference.
This will serve as a great refresher for:
- A reporter is at your church or via social media asks you to comment on their story about General Conference.
- Who’s the official spokesperson and speaks on behalf of The UMC.
- Where to find the real news and daily outcomes if you see something alarming on social media about General Conference.

S.L.A.M. team creates worship resources to honor Native American Ministries Sunday in April
Drawing on their mission trip last summer to the Yakama Reservation, youth and adults who are part of the GNW Area's Students Learning About Mission (S.L.A.M.) have written materials for churches to use to honor Native American Ministries Sunday. Native American Ministries Sunday is honored in The United Methodist Church on April 14 this year, but these materials can be used when appropriate. Using the lectionary text of Acts 3: 12-19, the youth and adults have written a prayer, call to worship and benediction.

Church and Society announces Issue Statement on Christian Nationalism
The rising influence of Christian Nationalism has increasingly seeped into U.S. politics threatening the vibrancy and the cultural fabric of U.S. democracy.
Christian Nationalism is defined as a political ideology that seeks to merge Christianity and a particular type of American identity, distorting both the Christian faith and the United States constitution. According to Christians Against Christian Nationalism, “it often overlaps and provides cover for white supremacy and racial subjugation”.

We acknowledge that the Methodist Church is complicit with and rooted in the colonization of Alaska and recognize that we live in that ongoing legacy. We lament the harm and trauma that our faith community causes. John Wesley, founder of the Methodist Movement, summarized God’s directives with three Rules: do no harm, do good, and attend to the ordinances of God. We also celebrate the grace, the love, and the good that our church does that calls us to re-imagine mission through intentional discipleship with one another.
We will live into the transition to a Mission District committed to:
Alaska Conference Values
- The love of God, neighbor, and self, demonstrated by the deliberate embracing and valuing of differences, the leveling of imbalances between people and systems, and the intentional dismantling of inequities in whatever forms they present themselves.
- Healing, grace-filled mission with communities and churches that prioritizes local experiences and shares resources across time and distance through equitable relationships.
- Living into connectionalism by belonging to and trusting in one another to nurture relationships that celebrate the gifts each of our communities bring, allowing us to move forward in a decolonized way.
