Wow,
this might turn into a monthly newsletter after all! Here we are
with issue 2. As always, we welcome your thoughts and comments
about this newsletter and about Ethiopian Orphan Relief in
general.
Thanks, as always, for being part of Ethiopian Orphan Relief.
Those of us on the board are so humbled by your ongoing
support.

| A
Little Tasfa for you |
|
 |
| tasfa |
On
October 9th, EOR sponsored the Tasfa
Ethiopia live and silent auction. Tasfa, which means
"hope" in Amharic was a huge success on all levels. We
grossed ALMOST $20,000 for our projects in Ethiopia. The event
planners, Alexan Events, did an amazing job
transforming
a gym into a classy
party space. Wendy Woo and Robin Hoch,
entertained everyone (and went away with a few silent auction
items) and the owner of Altitude Peak Fitness was so impressed with
our event that she has already volunteered the space again next
year. Most importantly, everyone had a great time and generously
opened their hearts and wallets for our cause!
There are no words
to express the overwhelming gratitude we have for all of our
volunteers, guests, donors and sponsors. Your generosity is truly
inspiring. THANK YOU to everyone who participated
in any way to make Tasfa a success.

EOR
is pleased to announce that we have recently partnered with LOLA,
an orphanage in Northern Ethiopia for HIV+ children and their
siblings. Lola Children's Home offers shelter, food,
medication and education that would otherwise be unavailable to
this population.
The Tasfa fundraiser offered the opportunity to buy beds and
linens for Lola Children's Home and I am pleased to tell you that
this initial project is almost completely funded. Additional
projects of varying scales are also being planned. We'll share
Lola Children's Home's successes with you as we visit in the
upcoming year.

Gena 2010 |
|
Christmas in
Ethiopia is called Gena
and it's celebrated on January 7th. Here at EOR,
we're gathering gifts to put into backpacks for the children of
Children's Heaven & FOVC (Friends of Orphans & Vulnerable
Children). Through "ProjectGena2010" your generosity will
brighten an orphan's life. EOR provides the
backpacks~~ can you help us fill them?
Would you like to
give to a boy or a girl? Email
kim@ethiopianorphanrelief.org to make plans to
shop for a specific child. Too busy to shop for all the special
someones on your personal gift list? A backpack for an Ethiopian
child makes a wonderful gift for others. For a donation of
15.00 we'll shop for you AND
send a special card to the honoree of your choice. A personalized
letter or photo makes a wonderful addition to any backpack - we
welcome yours. We can't wait to share a photo of the children
receiving their gifts, please include your address with your
donation so we can send you one too. To see a video of Project
Gena click here.
For those counting,
it's 60 days till Christmas! Let EOR help you take
some gifts off your list. A backpack for an Ethiopian child is the
perfect gift for everyone on your list!
If you'd like to
join in the fun, please prepare a gallon-sized ziploc bag of items
for a particular child. Underwear, school supplies, toothbushing
itemd, hair ties and small toys are wonderful items to include in
your bag, along with your personal note or picture. A bag stuffing
party is scheduled for December 5th, if you'd like to add your
donation to the fun, please contact Kim at the above address.
We've committed to
filling 147 bags for Ethiopia, and 83 are ready to go. Will you
help us fill the rest?

| The
notecards are here!! |

One
of Kim Pasion's greatest, well, passions is to include
children in EOR's fundraising efforts. Over the
last few years, kids have hosted lemonade stands, garage sales, and
'dress down' days at school. They've also crafted beautiful art
that The Paper Rabbit of Portland turns into
beautiful notecards. For the third year in a row,
EOR will be selling 3 different sets of cards,
with art made by the girls of Children's Heaven and adopted
Ethiopian children throughout the US. These sets of cards ($15 a
pack) make lovely gifts, although be sure to order a set or two for
yourself--they're hard to part with. Look to the
EOR blog for ordering information--additional
photos of the cards will be available there.
I'm planning to give packs of notecards and backpacks as holiday
gifts to all of the teachers we know. They'll love them as much as
I do. So will YOU, so place your order soon!

| Donor
Spotlight |
|
At Ethiopian Orphan Relief, we realize that donors like YOU are the
most important part of our program. From time-to-time, we'll
spotlight supporters from around the US. They, like you, are
committed to the children of Ethiopia.
Today, meet Amy & Joel Harcar of Whitehall, OH. I sat down
with Amy earlier this week to talk about their support of
EOR.
How did you get involved with EOR?
We learned about EOR when we began the adoption process in
2008.
How do you find ways to give?
We have a monthly check sent directly from our bank account so we
never forget to drop it in the mail. Amy also donated her birthday
last year on Facebook and raised over $300. We also volunteer with
EOR as often as we can. We're helping to plan the Dead of Winter
Bash in Columbus (3/5/11) and we help with smaller events, like
Macy's Shop for A Cause or holiday gift wrapping at Barnes &
Noble.
Why is being part of EOR important to you?
EOR does so many wonderful things for Ethiopia. We want to
give back to a country that has given us so much. We also had the
chance to visit Childrens Heaven while in Ethiopia. The director,
Hannah, told us how important EOR is to her and to her
school.
Are you independently wealthy? How can you afford to
give? We are not rich. We wish we could do more but figure it
is better to give a little then to not give at all. Our monthly
check is about the same cost as ordering a couple pizzas.
Thank you so much, Joel and Amy, for all that you do for Ethiopian
Orphan Relief. We couldn't do it without YOU! |
