Washington University in St. Louis - Office of Residential Life

"I am very proud of the willingness of our faculty to interact with students in the Residence Halls. I think this adds important enrichment to the lives of both groups. Faculty involvement is essential to our concept of a vibrant living and learning environment in our student housing."

-Edward Macias, Provost

Greetings!

Greetings from the Office of Residential Life!  I hope you are doing well and that your second semester is off to a terrific start.  In the Office of Residential Life we are in the throes of student staff selection, housing selection, and Faculty Associate recruitment.  Speaking of FA recruitment, please let me know if you have any colleagues that you would recommend for the program.  We are fortunate to have such dedicated faculty members participating in this program over the last 14 years.  We are especially grateful to Provost Macias and Dean McLeod for their continued support of the Faculty Associates and Faculty Fellows Program.

Congratulations to Professor Shanti Parikh on delivering the keynote speech at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemoration in Graham Chapel on January 17 and for being recognized with the Rosa Parks Service Award.  This month's newsletter includes more information about Shanti's campus contributions as well as a link to recent profile of her in The Record.  In addition, read on to find out about important upcoming dates and a review of this semester's programs.

Many thanks for all that you are doing to enrich the lives of students both in and outside of the classroom!

FA Shanti Parikh was the Faculty Keynote speaker for the 24th annual celebration honoring Martin Luther King Jr., held on January 17. During this event, Shanti was also named co-recipient of the Rosa L. Parks Award. This  award is given to persons and/or organizations that exemplify the valor of both Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa L. Parks. In July of 2010, Shanti became the first and only African American woman to receive tenure in Arts and Sciences at Washington University.  This February, Shanti was asked by students to partake in The Vagina Monologues, something she was more than excited to participate in. She performed an opening monologue entitled "Myriam" written by Vagina Monologues playwright Eve Ensler for Myriam Merlet, the Chief of Staff of Haiti's Ministry of Women who died in the 2010 Haiti earthquake.

Gina Alvarez and FF Jana Harper: Poems by Bobby Thiel
Poems by Bobby Thiel

Photograph by David Johnson

This collaborative print project was initiated by St. Louis artists Gina Alvarez and Jana Harper during a residency at Pyramid Atlantic in Silver Spring, Maryland. Inspired by a child's notebook of poems made in the 1940s, the artists appropriated the titles of his poems and worked to create pieces that combine photographs, images, shapes and colors inspired by Japanese prints and Indian miniatures. The exhibition is organized by the Sheldon Art Galleries (3648 Washington Blvd., St. Louis, MO WWW.THESHELDON.ORG).

The exhibition runs through June 4, 2011.

Gina Alvarez and Jana Harper will discuss their work and their collaborative process  during a
two Gallery Talks in the Nancy Spirtas Kranzberg Gallery on Saturday, March 19, at 1 p.m. and at 2 p.m.

FA Stan Braude's Case Studies for Understanding the Human Body

The second edition of FA Stan Braude's Case Studies for Understanding the Human Body has just come out from Jones Bartlett Press.  This new edition has kept the best fictional mysteries from the first edition with a whole new set of cases from popular culture.  These include Ted Kennedy's tragic brain tumor, Nancy Pelosi's botox injections, Jacky Robinson's diabetes, alcohol metabolism in Animal House, the Elephant Man's blocked lymphatics, Jimi Hendrix's drowning and Karen Carpenter's anorexia, the sacrifice of the beating heart in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, the consequences of Mrs. Robinson's seductive cigarette smoking, Sheriff Cane's fast reflexes in High Noon, Benjamin Franklin's bifocals, and many more.  Forced to stop at 45 chapters, he has saved Camille's consumption, Gogol's Nose, Hardy's Milkmaid, Proust's madellines, Poe's heart and dozens of others for the forthcoming, Literary Companion to the Human Body.
