| Greetings! |
It's Anniversary Sunday! We're expecting a full sanctuary, joy-filled worship, and heart-warming fellowship as we celebrate not only our church's 133-year heritage but also our unlimited future in God's Kingdom. The Reverend Charlie Reynolds - pastor at Verona from 2007-2008 - will be with us this Sunday to preach at both morning services on "What's in Your Wallet?" There will also be a covered-dish meal at noon. A special treat after our meal will be a concert by The Allred Family (here's a link to their rendition of "If We Ever").
There is so much to praise God for at VUMC. I hope you will not only come this Sunday, but invite your friends to come and find a place where they can "belong and become!"
Grace and peace.... Pastor Bob

This Sunday's Sermon Text

Old Testament Lesson: Joshua 24: 1-3a; 14-24
Excerpt from Joshua 24:
2 Joshua said to all the people, "This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: 'Long ago your ancestors, including Terah the father of Abraham and Nahor, lived beyond the Euphrates River and worshiped other gods. 3 But I took your father Abraham from the land beyond the Euphrates and led him throughout Canaan and gave him many descendants.... 14 "Now fear the LORD and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your ancestors worshiped beyond the Euphrates River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD..... choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve..., but as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD."
New Testament Lesson: Matthew 25: 1-13
1 "At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. 2 Five of them were foolish and five were wise. 3 The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them. 4 The wise ones, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps. 5 The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep.
6 "At midnight the cry rang out: 'Here's the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!' 7 "Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. 8 The foolish ones said to the wise, 'Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.' 9 "'No,' they replied, 'there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.' 10 "But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut. 11 "Later the others also came. 'Lord, Lord,' they said, 'open the door for us!" 12 "But he replied, "Truly I tell you, I don't know you.' 13 "Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour."

Fall Festival Thank You
|
Thank You!
God is good all the time! All the time, God is good!
Yes, this year's "Snowy" Fall Festival was a huge success! Realizing the weather report was not promising, at least one of us (me) began to worry, and many more of you began to pray. By midweek, the church halls had filled up with boxes of canning jars, along with ingredients for Brunswick stew and wonderful handmade and homemade items for the auction. The Apple Dumpling Gang got to work early Friday morning baking and preparing for the festival.
By Friday afternoon tents were going up outside in preparation for the winter storm that was approaching. In the wee hours of Saturday morning as the snow and freezing rain continued to fall, church members arrived to build fires, stir apple butter, cook chicken, cut up ingredients for Brunswick stew and prepare breakfast for the community. The long, hard labor of the day had begun. As the heavy snow was falling the sounds of fellowship and laughter could be heard throughout the church yard as God listened and answered prayers. Inside we enjoyed a delicious warm breakfast, a wonderful auction experience and the precious harmony of the Allred family singing. Outside we were selling out of our famous stew, barbeque chicken, beans, pork rinds, and apple butter. Finally, we finished the afternoon with the laughter of little ones enjoying Trunk or Treat! What an amazing day it was! Thanks to each of you for helping make 2011's Fall Festival one to remember!
- Kim Cash, Fall Festival Chair

Our "Hee Haw" Tribute was a great success!
|
Three performances of our "Hee Haw Tribute" last weekend filled the fellowship hall with laughter, clapping, singing, and FUN. Director Carol Brydge wishes to thank the cast, band, and crew - and every member of the church and community who came out to support us. We have a feeling you haven't seen the last of "Hee Haw"!

This year we invite all of you to take an apple and have the opportunity to share the true meaning of Christmas with the children and their families. Toys for Tots
|
The Verona UMC Day Care will be taking donations for Toys for Tots starting November 4 through December 1, 2011. There will be a drop off box located in the daycare area and main entrance upstairs. We greatly appreciate any and all donations. The Toys for Tots program helps children, infants up to 16 years old with new unwrapped toys for a happy holiday. The program has a few suggestions to help with your choices for the vast age difference of toys that may be suitable for them. They are suggesting no stuffed animals if at all possible, no electronic games as these families may not have the equipment for them. If a small electronic toy is given please get the batteries that go with them and tape them to it. Suggestions for the older children could be a radio with headphones along with batteries. Infant mobiles are a good choice also. Any other toys age appropriate are welcomed.

A Harvest of Hearts
On November 4 from 6:00-9:00 pm at Mt. Tabor UMC there will be a District Celebration of Missions. We will recognize the mission work of the churches on the Harrisonburg District. There will be guest speakers, testimonials from those whose lives have been touched by these outreaches, and a video presentation documenting the mission work of our district. It will be a fun and moving night of celebration! We will share a dinner meal of: Grilled Steak, baked potato, salad, roll, dessert, drink for a fee of $10. One free meal will be provided by the District to each church. Please invite as many people from your church as possible, as this event will help "fan the flame" of mission work in your church.
