July Bio-Beer

Our July Bio-Beer was a great success!  Members of both Vermont Biosciences Alliance and the Vermont Technology Alliance gathered at Queen City Brewery on July 22 to network and strengthen joint relationships.  Make sure to save the date for our next Bio Beer on October 7th at Queen City Brewery.


VBSA welcomes new board members

Tom Scarnecchia co-founder of Digital Aurora provides advisory and management services for informatics intensive life science and healthcare research initiatives.  Mr. Scarnecchia has deep expertise in establishing and leading research informatics organizations and initiatives spanning drug discovery, clinical trials, regulatory science, and real-world healthcare data. Digital Aurora advises on the implementation of virtual R&D organizations and collaboration platforms for research partnerships and alliances, and have led the design and implementation of large scale scientific computing facilities.



Xavier Ambroggio of Rosetta Design Group RDG is an elite CRO providing macromolecular modeling, bioinformatics, and consulting services for clients in the pharmaceutical, biotech, academic, military, government, and non-profit sectors. 

In conjunction with the Rosetta Commons, RDG hosts RosettaCON, a premier macromolecular modeling conference, co-organized annually by Dr. Ambroggio. From 2010-2013, Dr. Ambroggio developed computational research infrastructure and performed research for the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) with the Bioinformatics and Computational Biosciences Branch of NIAID through contracts with Lockheed Martin and Medical Science & Computing. Prior to RDG, Dr. Ambroggio was an NRSA postdoctoral fellow with Dr. Brian Kuhlman at UNC, where they developed and experimentally validated algorithms for designing proteins capable of adopting multiple, predefined folds. He received his Ph.D. as an NSF Fellow at Caltech, where he investigated the structure and biochemistry of the 19S proteasome with Dr. Doug Rees and Dr. Ray Deshaies.

Vermont BioSciences Alliance Sponsors Upcoming Northeast Regional Life Sciences Core Directors Meeting

The VBSA is proud to announce they will serve as a sponsor for the upcoming 10th annual Northeast Regional Life Sciences Core Directors (NERLSCD) Meeting October 14-16, 2015 at the Burlington Hilton in Burlington, VT, and hosted by the University of Vermont (UVM). The NERLSCD meeting (often called the NERDS meeting) is an outstanding regional forum for core facility administrators, directors, managers and staff to network with colleagues, to learn about biotechnology advances and their applications, and to discuss the challenges of implementing shared research resources. 

 

The NERLSCD meeting is great venue for scientists looking to access specific technologies and expertise required to facilitate their research interest. There will be presentations and discussion forums on operational issues facing biotechnology core laboratories and technical workshops on Next Generation Sequencing, proteomics and metabolomics, imaging and microscopy, flow cytometry, metagenomics and digital PCR.  A core facility poster session offers an opportunity for learning about regional life sciences shared resources and services.  Last year's meeting had 121 attendees from 50 institutions in 16 states in the USA and 2 provinces in Canada.

 

NERLSCD is a regional chapter of the Association of Bi molecular Resource Facilities (ABRF).  ABRF is an international society dedicated to advancing core and research biotechnology laboratories through research, communication, and education; more information about ABRF will be shared during the meeting. In addition to learning about regional resources, specific technologies and ABRF, two specific sessions may be of interest to VBSA members "Sustaining Discovery in Biological and Medical Sciences" and "Stakeholder Roundtable Discussion on Sustaining Discovery in Biological and Medical Sciences." These session will be back to back on Thursday morning Oct. 15, 2015.
