Upcoming Service

A Blessing for Transformation

Rev. Jaimie Dingus

10:45 a.m., Sunday, March 31, 2024

This year, Easter Sunday falls on Transgender Day of Visibility. What an appropriate coincidence! Join for this traditional Easter Sunday service where we remember our Christian roots, and the lessons of resurrection, and where we bless and uplift our trans siblings, who are our modern day teachers of transformation.

UUA General Assembly and Article II

Last Sunday in my sermon, I referenced the changes being made to Article II of the UUA bylaws that would replace the principles and sources with a new covenant of values. This is an exciting upcoming change, but with any change we will want to think deeply and have discussions about it.

You can read more about these changes to Article II here.

If you are interested in registering to participate at this year's Online General Assembly you can do that here.

And look out for more details about a Pre-GA workshop I will offer after church on Sunday June 9th to learn more about these changes!

Pre-K – Fifth

This week our younger kids will explore the observance of Easter through the lens of the emotional transformation of coming back to life after sad and hard experiences. Just as Jesus’ disciples first despaired at the crucifixion, they found excitement and commitment later while walking down the road to Emmaus. We too have bad times when we are sad, despairing and disillusioned, but then there are opportunities for rekindling hope in our hearts

YoUUth Group

Our yoUUth will explore what transformation means for us as Unitarian Universalists. We describe ourselves as a “living tradition,” which means we expect changes as we learn and grow. Just like our bodies grow and change, so do our passions and ideas. But we also acknowledge that change can be hard. We can celebrate change and also be gentle with each other during the difficulties that come about with change.

Summer Plans

In previous years at UUCH, adults would volunteer to teach a class during the summer and present a topic or skill of their choosing. We will be attempting to do this again for the months of June and July. Classes will include ages pre-k all the way up to high school seniors. If this sounds intimidating, don’t worry, CYRE teachers will still be available to assist. If there are any supplies that you would like to have provided, please contact dre@uuch.org. You can find the signup here, and thank you so much for contributing to the success of our CYRE program!

The Jane Welty Memorial Service will be on Saturday, April 6th at 1:30pm at UUCH with a reception to follow. All are welcome! A reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall. If you would like to help with the reception, sign up here .

Found Items

A few weeks ago a set of keys was found in the parking lot and last Sunday the lenses from a pair of glasses were found in the sanctuary. If they are yours, contact the Property Committee at property@uuch.org

Together We Can Reach our Budget Goals. Please Pledge!

We are in the final phase of our pledge drive. We appreciate everyone’s participation thus far. Will we exceed last year’s pledge total of $285K? Together We Can!

We pledge our financial support because we love our church and what it stands for. A pledge of any amount connects us and is greatly appreciated. Let's build the beloved community of our dreams.

In the words of Rev. Jaimie: “This is an exciting time to be a part of the future of UUCH. We need you, your generosity, your commitment and your leadership to fully realize our potential in this next year. Join me in supporting our 2024-2025 Annual Budget Drive, because together we can do powerful things!”

Please fill out your pledge form online at: https://uuch.org/connecting/pledge/

Hardcopy forms are available in Fellowship Hall. Contact stewardship@uuch.org or Zena Tucker for more information

Join Us for a Spring Cleaning Work Day at the Church!

With Easter just around the corner, it's time to prepare our beloved church for the joyous celebrations ahead! We're excited to announce that we'll be hosting a Property Work Day on Saturday, March 30th, and we need your helping hands to make it a success.

This spring cleaning event is not just about tidying up our surroundings; it's an opportunity for us to come together as a community, bond over shared tasks, and prepare our church for the meaningful Easter season. Whether you have a knack for gardening, a passion for organizing, or simply a willingness to lend a hand, there's a role for everyone to play.

Here are some of the tasks we'll be tackling:

  • Gardening and landscaping to beautify our grounds
  • Cleaning and organizing common areas
  • Minor repairs

The work day will begin at 9:00 and continue until around 12:00. We'll provide all the necessary cleaning supplies and equipment, as well as light refreshments to keep our energy levels up.

By participating in this event, you'll not only contribute to the physical upkeep of our church but also strengthen the bonds of fellowship within our community. Together, we can create a welcoming and uplifting environment for all who enter our doors this Easter season.

So mark your calendars for Saturday, March 30th, and let's roll up our sleeves to make a difference together. Your presence and participation will make all the difference!

If you have any questions or would like to sign up in advance, please contact property@uuch.org.

Thank you for your dedication to our church family, and we look forward to seeing you there!

New UU Class

Are you new to UUCH?

Just want to learn a little more about your church?

Join Us Sunday mornings April 7, 14, 21

9:00 a.m. in Adult RE Classroom

What does it mean to be a Unitarian Universalist? Guided by the Tapestry of Faith Curriculum, we will offer a three-part series that explores important themes in UU congregational life – our worship and theology, history, covenant and polity, faith development, social justice, and membership. This program is particularly focused on introducing newcomers to Unitarian Universalism, but those of us who have been here for a while will also be able to share and connect with others as we explore our own beliefs and how they intersect with the UU tradition. Everyone is welcome!

Mark your calendars now for the Sunday mornings of April 7, 14, 21 for this chance to learn and share. Meet for coffee or tea at 9:00 a.m. in the Adult RE classroom; discussion starts at 9:15. Nancy Finley and Sandy Moore will facilitate the discussion. Child care will be provided.

Contact Nancy (secretary@uuch.org) for further info.

Everyone is Welcome!

Book Discussion Coming Soon!

The book "Life Worth Living: A Guide to What Matters Most" by Volf, Croasmun, and McAnnally-Linz is based on the most popular class in Yale’s humanities program (Yale College). The first meeting for this group will be after church on April 14, to outline the approach to reading and discussing it, and to decide upon our meeting schedule. Tim Miller will be the leader of this group, and it is his nephew Matthew Croasmun who is the second author. It is possible that Dr. Croasmun will visit the group the weekend of April 28. Signups of folks interested in participating are needed in order to estimate the group’s size and whether Matt would make the trip to Huntsville. There is one book available at the church for perusal, and it is noted that it may be purchased in either physical or digital form at the links at lifeworthlivingbook.com. Please indicate your interest ASAP by either signing the sheet in our fellowship hall, or to Teri Thomas (Adult RE chair) at adult.re@uuch.org.

Save the Date

The 2024 Annual Congregational Meeting will be held on Sunday, June 23rd. Make sure it is on your calendar.

Online worship for UUCH is moving to YouTube!

Beginning in April, our primary means of sharing our Worship Services will be on YouTube, instead of Zoom. Your tech team will make the weekly order of service available in our channel. We hope you will join us there!

FAQ:

Q: How will I find our YouTube feed?

A: We will provide the link in our newsletters, websites and email. Also, to ease the transition, we’ll post the YouTube link into our old Zoom room for a few weeks.

Q: Do I need a YouTube account?

A: No, one can view without signing into YouTube. However, if you would like to join the fun in commenting on our YouTube feed, you will need to sign in. Additionally, by signing in you’ll be able to “Like” and “Subscribe” to our channel and receive notifications of new videos!

Q: Why are we moving to YouTube?

A: YouTube has much better sound quality and is easily found by others on the internet, making our presence in the community more accessible.

Q: What about Ads?

A: Yes, there will be some ads—unless you have a paid YouTube account.

Q: Will I be able to comment on the feed?

A: Yes. If you sign in, your comments may be posted. Your tech team and YouTube will be monitoring for any inappropriate comments. Please let us know if you spot anything we’ve missed!

Q: Are other UU churches using YouTube?

A: Yes. Several of our sibling congregations are using YouTube with great success.

Q: Will there be closed captioning available?

A: Yes

Circle of Candles

Khoe Tran and Robert Richmond lit a candle of Sorrow: "Thoughts and prayers are given in support of Nancy Pettus as she grieves the sudden death of her younger brother last week."

Tim and Theresa Miller lit a candle of Sorrow: "Our 10 year old granddaughter, Amelia, had her two front teeth knocked out in a trampoline accident. It will be a long road to reconstruction. Little Food Pantry

Signups for the LFP have slowed to a trickle unless you are filling it without signing up in the signup genius. It’s hard to know. Our LFP is a much needed service to the neighborhood. Fill it with nutritious foods. Folks rarely take garbanzo beans or lentils (even though they are nutritious). Let’s try to keep the pantry going! Please, if you are able to fill it up, please note your name in the Genius. Also, you can bring non perishables to church, as there are baskets. A big thank you to all who do contribute!
