TSA Youth Ambassador Appears on "Chopped"

TSA Youth Ambassador Tyler Bloch spread incredible national awareness about Tourette Syndrome to a vast audience of viewers on the July 2 episode of the Food Network series "Chopped" in the episode "Teen Invasion." Tyler was trained as a TSA Youth Ambassador in 2012 (his brother Jared was also trained as a TSA YA in 2011). At 14 years old, Tyler has so many interests and passions, one of which is cooking. He started getting inspired watching cooking shows on the Food Network.  After watching many episodes of the show called "Chopped," Tyler thought, "Wow, they should do a teen episode," and went on their website to inquire. About six months later, he discovered that they just finished taping one teen episode and were in the process of casting for a second teen episode. Eager to get on the show, Tyler completed a casting application with the hopes of securing an interview. After not hearing back within the week, Tyler took it upon himself to contact the casting director himself. To his surprise, the "Chopped" casting director called him back and he had his first phone interview which was later followed by a second on-camera interview in Manhattan. Several months later he was told he didn't make the cut but that it was very close.  As luck would have it, a month later, he received notification that he indeed made it to the final level of casting and they wanted him for the show. According to Tyler, "The entire 'Chopped' journey mimicked reality; there were rejections, there were acceptances, and there were times when hard work and diligence paid off." Tyler said in one of his interviews, "At the age of 7 I was diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome. It's really a blessing because I wouldn't be who I was today if I didn't have it." He wanted to show that if you put your mind to doing something, anything is possible. In the first round, the teen chefs were asked to create an appetizer out of grapefruit, tuna loin, hen of the woods mushrooms and graham cracker cereal. The episode with Tyler is scheduled to re-air on July 11 at 9:00 pm, but please check your local listings to confirm! We are so proud of Tyler!

Thank you to everyone who came to the Second Annual National TSA Awareness Walk on Sunday, June 23 in Flushing Meadows Park in New York! It was an amazing and successful day! The weather was perfect and over 350 people came to walk, run and support the event which raised over $50,000 for TSA! We had members from as far as CA, KS, MA, FL, IL, TN, CT and NJ attend! Performances from Dave Pittman, The Brady Brothers, The Rough Dozen and Chelsea White entertained the walkers as they relaxed with refreshments and snacks after the 5K. Next year will be even bigger and better and we hope you will be able to join us! For more photos from the event, visit the photo album on our Facebook page here!

Just added! American Idol's James Durbin will be performing and meeting TEAM TSA families at the TSA Disneyland Marathon Luncheon at noon on Saturday, August 31 in California! But TEAM TSA's Disneyland team is almost full! We have less than 20 5K slots, 20 10K slots, and we have one Half Marathon slot left. All the events except the 10K are password protected - so you need a password to register. If you are interested in joining the team and obtaining the password, please email us asap! However, if you are interested in just attending the luncheon and not participating in the marathon and meeting James (and our other fabulous speakers and performers to be announced soon!), please email us as we may be able to open the luncheon up to non-runners. CBIT Training Session Held in New Hampshire

On June 21 in Manchester, NH, Sabine Wilhelm, Ph.D. Professor, Harvard Medical School, Director, OCD and Related Disorders Program, Massachusetts General Hospital and member of the TSA Medical Advisory Board, presented a 6-hour Cognitive Behavioral Intervention for Tics (CBIT) training session in  New Hampshire. Interest in and the desire to practice CBIT was keen with this group of Ph.D., LMHC and LICSW professionals, several of who drove for over two hours each way for this TSA-CDC program opportunity.

The photo is of Dr. Wilhelm conducting an instructive and lively role-play session.
