Prayer for the Masters Fund

O heavenly Father, Lord of the harvest, we pray you to send forth laborers into your field. Fit and prepare them by your grace for their work in your church.

Give them the spirit of power and of love and a sound mind and grant that both by their lives and by their doctrine they may show forth your glory and

advance the salvation of all,

For His Sake, our Lord and Master.   AMEN.

Master's Fund Ingathering June 8, 2014

The Ingathering for the Master's Fund is always the Day of Pentecost and this year it falls on June 8, which is just in time for each Daughter to participate in the education of some of the most wonderful women you may never meet. Each of these women will impact and bless our Church and its members for years to come, thus continuing our calling to spread the Kingdom of God among women and girls.

As you know, the Master's Fund was established at the Order's National Convention held at Portland, Oregon, in September 1922, as a thank offering to be given at Whitsuntide in loving commemoration of the coming of the Holy Spirit.  The monies in the fund are the result of the individual contributions from Daughters of the King as an outward expression of their prayers and support of women who seek to help in the spread of God's Kingdom, especially among women and girls.  We believe both the contributors and the recipients have been touched by the Holy Spirit.  The scholarships and grants are blessed by the prayers of all Daughters who have contributed to the Fund, as well as all Daughters who pray daily for the spread of God's Kingdom.

The Master's Fund needs each one of us.  College and seminary educations are expensive, and there are many women seeking Holy Orders who are in need of financial help so they can obtain the formal education that leads to ministry within the Church throughout the world.  The number and amount of the scholarships and grants are determined by the amount of money available in the Fund when applications are reviewed by the Master's Fund Committee.   Awards are granted on a needs basis and are available to women age 21 and over.  In the 2013-2014 school year, $36,000 in grants and scholarships was awarded to 44 women attending 24 institutions.  (See next month's Cross+Links for notes sent by some of our grant/scholarship recipients.)

When you are a student, every dollar counts, and for our recipients, every prayer counts even more.  So this June 8, please be generous in your giving and your praying.  While Pentecost is the designated date for ingathering, donations may be sent to the Master's Fund any time.  To make a donation online, click here or for a mailable Contribution Form click here. On behalf of our recipients, thank you for your generous support, past, present and future.

May 2014 - Spirited Walking Meditation

Our theme this month is Basic Beliefs.  Our beliefs come to us in varied ways, from childhood Sunday School classes, from life experiences, or the witnessing of others. The beliefs that are the foundation of our lives deserve our deepest thoughts. This month, reflect on a simple statement that underlies your spiritual grounding.

"What our Lord requires of us is this - to do justice, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with our God." Micah 6:8

Pennies for Triennial

Here's a penny small and round;

We see them on the ground.

When on our own we think we must,

The penny reads "In God We Trust."

"In God We Trust," the national motto of our country, is on every United States coin.  The penny is worth a small amount but if you put them with more pennies, they grow and grow!

I'm a Pinterest follower.  There are great ideas and practical things on this site.  I came across the money challenge for saving.  There are many different amounts, but for me the penny challenge seemed doable.  A penny a day on the first day (got that!), two pennies the second day (wow, got that too!), and three pennies the third day (ok, I have that too).  You get the picture.  At the end of 365 days, you will have $667.95 (a good start to saving for Triennial).

How many times have you passed up a penny on the ground?  I challenge you - pick up the penny.  But do more, read it.  Those words say "In God We Trust."  Hold that penny for just a moment and say a prayer for this Triennial.  The theme is "Shining the Light of Christ."  That is truly what we are called to do.

"In God We Trust," one penny at a time.  Start saving now!  Maybe you will find more pennies than you need and can help another Daughter come to Triennial.  Or maybe your extra pennies can be a love offering for the Lord's work.

See you at Triennial!

Announcing the National Junior Chaplain

The Reverend Dr. Deborah Jackson

It is with great pleasure that I announce that the Reverend Dr. Deborah Jackson has agreed to be our National Junior Chaplain.  Mother Deborah is a native of Jacksonville, Florida, and currently serves as the Associate Dean for Community Life at The School of Theology at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. She served as a priest at several churches in the Diocese of Florida before beginning this position in Sewanee last fall. She is delighted to be back in Sewanee at The School of Theology, having graduated from there with her Masters of Divinity in 2007.

Mother Deborah has been a Daughter of the King for over ten years, and her daughter was a Junior Daughter for a short while.  Daughters in Province IV may remember her from the retreat she led a couple of years ago at Kanuga.  I know that she has some wonderful ideas and skills to bring to the Junior Daughters.  Hopefully, we will be hearing from her on the Junior Daughters Facebook page soon, and perhaps even in the Junior Directress Yahoo Group.  She joined the team too late to get an article from her published in the next Junior Messenger, since it is currently in production, but perhaps in the following one.  In one form of communication or another, we look forward to hearing directly from her before too long.

Attention Junior Directresses

Have your chapters finished their quilt squares?  We need to have them all in before the Junior Directress Retreat in August.  We cannot lay the quilt out without knowing how many squares we will have (no placeholders allowed).

Please finish them and send them in to St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Attn: Brandylee Marsh, 15415 N Eldridge Pkwy, Cypress, TX 77429.  If you have questions about the quilt squares, email me Susan Keith.

If you haven't already, now is the time to register for the National Junior Directress Retreat at Camp Allen, August 7-10, 2014.  Click here to register.

Coming Soon: Dues Packets

The dues packets for the next fiscal year, 2014-2015, are currently being printed and assembled for mailing in the next couple of weeks. Chapter Presidents should expect to receive their packets by the beginning of June.  If you do not receive your packet, please contact the National Office at (770) 517-8552 ext 24 to determine the status of your specific packet.

Dues ($40) for Fiscal Year 2014-2015 are due on September 1, 2014.  Please collect your chapter's dues over the summer in order to meet the submission deadline.

We are delighted to let you know that this may be the final year we do Chapter Dues Packets!  As the Order transitions to a new membership software (see information below), the dues payment process will change to allow individual Daughters to pay their dues directly.

New Membership Software

The Order is excited to announce the selection of our new membership software - YourMembership.com!  The new software will allow Daughters to do much more online such as:

  • View their profile including individual dues, donations, and orders
  • Update their contact information
  • Message other Daughters

The new software will also allow the chapter president to view limited information for the Daughters in their chapter, such as their dues status!  Therefore, the need for dues packets will be limited.

Please watch for updates on the progress of the software via The Order's website, www.doknational.com; in Cross+Links, the Order's monthly emailed newsletter; and The Royal Cross.

Bags of Blessings

As many of you know, I've been seeking ideas for service projects and have asked for chapters to let me know what they are doing.  At our Colorado Assembly retreat, Joan Dalrymple told me about a service project her chapter in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, does at Christmastime.  They work with a grocery chain that is willing to provide non-perishable food for Christmas Dinners.  Parishioners are also invited to offer donations so gift certificates for a turkey can be included.  Once the food has been gathered, the chapter puts the food in bags with handles, includes a gift certificate for the turkey and a prayer of blessing.  The bag is then tied with ribbon and taken to "Lift", the local thrift store, which distributes them to those who need them.  I love this project because it has a beginning and an end, the entire chapter can work together to accomplish a wonderful service, and it works for any holiday.  Small communities could benefit especially well from this project.

If your chapter has a special service project that involves the whole chapter working together, and is willing to share, please send it to me at Lyn Zolman  and I'll add it to my "basket" to share with other chapters through Cross+Links or the Royal Cross.

The Search

The search -

for self,

for wisdom,

for love,

for truth,

for justice,

for God -

is strenuous and unending.

We need good companions

in order to persevere in it.

In good company,

in a community of conviction,

the quest never loses its relevance,

its urgency,

or its savor.
