St. John Book Club

Book Club is reading Here All Along: Finding Meaning, Spirituality, and a Deeper Connection to Life — In Judaism (After Finally Choosing to Look There) by Sarah Hurwitz on July 9 at 6:30pm at the home of Nancy Allen. Please contact Diana Grusczynski at diana.grusczynski@outlook.com for the address.

A renowned political speechwriter rediscovers Judaism, finding timeless wisdom and spiritual connection in its age-old practices and traditions. After a decade as a political speechwriter—serving as head speechwriter for First Lady Michelle Obama among others, Hurwitz, the quintessential lapsed Jew attended an introductory class on Judaism. She attended on a whim, but was blown away by what she found: beautiful rituals, helpful guidance on living an ethical life, conceptions of God beyond the judgy bearded man in the sky—none of which she had learned in Hebrew school or during the two synagogue services she grudgingly attended each year.

SAVE THE DATE!

Our 1st Parish Family Picnic is Sunday, July 21

at St. Benedict from 12pm-3pm.

Join our new family members from St. Ben and St. Al for a fun day of meeting new people, sharing a meal and spending time together.  More details and information to come!

WE ARE SO CLOSE TO OUR ACA GOAL -- PLEASE HELP US GET THERE!

Asante Sana to the over 185 families who have donated $86,629 (95%) of our goal of $90,930

Once we reach our goal, all funds collected will come back to St. John Parish. This year, our rebate will go into our Operating Budget to support necessary maintenance needs. As an example, you may have noticed that around the Church we repaired the cement on the front steps and the walkway on the south side. We also leveled and laid cement at the crosswalk in front of Egan Hall.

The quickest and easiest way to donate is to do so online.

Please go to www.archseattle.org/GiveACA.

Jambo Rafikis,

Please pray for me too as I take on a new assignment in Kent. I will think of you often and fondly, as you have made me so welcome here. And you will always be in my prayers.

St. Vincent de Paul

Please help fill the hygiene kits

As you may know, our St. John conference of St. Vincent de Paul has been participating in a special ministry to those who are living in RVs. The City of Seattle has an RV pump-out program, and our members accompany them to visit and provide aid to the inhabitants of the RVs. Their needs are different from neighbors who live in homes, so we have been assembling and providing “hygiene kits” for them. We’ve had lots of help with this from the school and Scouts, but right now, as summer begins, our supplies are running low and we could really use some help from you.

We are in need of small, travel size, items that will fit in a gallon Ziploc bag such as:

Kleenex packets, deodorant, body wipes, razors, lip gloss, bug repellant, and sun screen

You can drop your donations in the St. Vincent de Paul barrel in the vestibule, or take them to the parish office. As always, thank you for supporting our mission to share Christ’s love with our neighbors.

Liturgical Life of the Parish

Vigil or Anticipated Mass

NORMALLY THE liturgical day runs from midnight to midnight, but on Sundays and solemnities it begins on the evening of the previous day. Parishes commonly offer a “Sunday” Mass on Saturday evening. Some call this an “anticipated Mass,” though the official liturgical texts never do. The Mass that evening is not anticipating Sunday. It is a celebration of Sunday. Read more.
