St. Clare Updates for
August 31 - September 13, 2024
| |
|
Summer break comes to an end with our long weekend in September, which also marks the start of our parish programs and activities. We hope that you will want to join one of them to deepen your faith and remain rooted in Church teachings and traditions.
We also continue our 25th Anniversary celebrations.
Already behind us was a lovely Parish Feast Day. We were blessed to have Archbishop M. Miller with us that day. There was a great Mass at 11 am followed by our famous BBQ. The weather was great; the participation and the spirit of community was equally great. Thank you to all who helped make it such a joyful and successful day!
This was also the day that we unveiled a Pro-Life monument sponsored by Knights of Columbus. Included in this bulletin is a message with details about the event from the Grand Knight, Michael Blackstock.
Coming up is a special Mass on October 5th with a Gala dinner to follow. I am very excited to announce that shortly, we will have a special book about our St. Clare Parish community and church. In it you will find a tour guide of our church, with lovely stories, pictures and much more!

Food for Thought . . . and for the Soul
|
Julian of Norwich (c. 1343 – after 1416) was an English anchoress of the Middle Ages. Her writings, now known as Revelations of Divine Love, are the earliest surviving English-language works by a woman, although it is possible that some anonymous works may have had female authors. They are also the only surviving English-language works by an anchoress.
Julian lived in the English city of Norwich, an important centre for commerce that also had a vibrant religious life. During her lifetime, the city suffered the devastating effects of the Black Death of 1348–1350. In 1373, aged 30 and so seriously ill she thought she was on her deathbed, Julian received a series of visions or "shewings" of the Passion of Christ. She recovered from her illness and wrote two versions of her experiences, the earlier one being completed soon after her recovery—a much longer version, today known as the Long Text, was written many years later.
Julian lived in permanent seclusion as an anchoress in her cell, which was attached to St Julian's Church, Norwich. Four wills are known in which sums were bequeathed to a Norwich anchoress named Julian, and an account by the celebrated mystic Margery Kempe exists which provides evidence of counsel Kempe was given by the anchoress.
Details of Julian's family, education, or of her life before becoming an anchoress are not known; it is unclear whether her actual name was Julian. Preferring to write anonymously, and seeking isolation from the world, she was nevertheless influential in her lifetime. While her writings were carefully preserved, the Reformation prevented their publication in print.
Julian lived in a time of turmoil, but her theology was optimistic and spoke of God's omnibenevolence and love in terms of joy and compassion. Revelations of Divine Love "contains a message of optimism based on the certainty of being loved by God and of being protected by his Providence"
| |
|
The Catechism of the Catholic Church quotes from Revelations of Divine Love in its explanation of how God can draw a greater good, even from evil.
"All shall be well, and all shall be well,
and all manner of things shall be well"

St Pope Pius X Feast Day August 21
Pope Pius X (2 June 1835 – 20 August 1914) was head of the Catholic Church from 4 August 1903 to his death in August 1914. Pius X is known for vigorously opposing modernist interpretations of Catholic doctrine, and for promoting liturgical reforms and scholastic theology. He initiated the preparation of the 1917 Code of Canon Law, the first comprehensive and systemic work of its kind. He is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church.
Pius X was devoted to the Blessed Virgin Mary under the title of Our Lady of Confidence. He advanced the Liturgical Movement. He encouraged the frequent reception of Holy Communion, and he lowered the age for First Communion, which became a lasting innovation of his papacy.
He developed a reputation as being very friendly with children. He carried candy in his pockets for the street urchins in Mantua and Venice, and taught them catechism. During papal audiences, he would gather children around him and talk about things that interested them. His weekly catechism lessons in the courtyard of San Damaso in the Vatican always included a special place for children, and his decision to require the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine in every parish was partly motivated by a desire to save children from religious ignorance.

Project Advance 2024!
Thank you to everyone who has donated to this year’s Project Advance campaign. Because of your generosity we have received $87,416 in pledges from only 192 of our families or 20% of our registered parishioners. While we have met our diocesan commitment of $61,300, we still have a long way to go to meet our parish goal of $200,000. All additional pledges will be used to help pay our mortgage and fund other special projects as required in the parish.
If you have not yet donated, please take a few minutes to prayerfully consider what you and your family would like to donate this year. We would love to have 100% participation from our parishioners. Remember, every gift regardless of its size make a difference. Every gift counts.
You can contribute to Project Advance by going online at projectadvance.ca. You can also complete a pledge form (available in the lobby) and put it in the collection, drop it off at the office or mail it to St. Clare of Assisi Parish, 1320 Johnson Street, Coquitlam, B.C. V3B 4T5. Cheques should be made out to Project Advance. You can also call 604-683-0281. Ext. 323
A special note for anyone who has donated online and has any questions. Please email donations@rcav.org and they will help you. For example, they can tell you when your past pledge expires, how much you have pledged and they can change your credit card or banking information.
Our way forward begins with your generosity in growing our parish and local Catholic community. We’re grateful for your support. Thank you!

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION
22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time
September 1
"Be doers of the word and not hearers only…"
James 1:22
| | | |
|
It’s easy to understand the definition of stewardship – living a grateful and generous life. The hard part is doing it! How do your words and actions reflect God’s word? Do you share your time in prayer with God daily? Do you use your talent to help those in need without expecting anything in return? Are you generous with your financial resources? If not, what are you waiting for?

REVERENCE FOR LIFE MEMORIAL
|
On Sunday August 11th, we came together to celebrate the Feast Day of St. Clare of Assisi. With providence, the year 2024 is also the year to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the establishment of St. Clare of Assisi Parish in Coquitlam.
In commemoration of this day and in recognition of the 25th anniversary, we unveiled a Reverence for Life Memorial stone and garden, to be blessed by Archbishop Miller. This Memorial to life will remain a part of our parish forevermore.
This project was initiated by the Knights of Columbus Council in our parish about five years ago to recognize the unborn and their right to life; a fundamental belief of our faith. In recent years, euthanasia or MAID has become increasingly prevalent in our society. As a result, the focus for this monument shifted from recognizing the rights of just the unborn, to all life, from conception to its natural end.
Funds were raised to support the cost of this monument through Knight’s events held at the parish, a corporate donation by a local funeral home and personal donations of individual Knights for its creation and installation
We thank all those who have contributed to this project in any way, leaving a legacy for our parish community and the Knights of this parish.
Let us continue to pray daily for the sanctity of all life. And when at our parish, we encourage you to stop, sit and pray at this Reverence for Life Memorial.
Scripture
Jeremiah 1:5 “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born, I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations”
Meaning of the Engraving
The engraved images show reverence for human life from conception to its natural end and our resurrection through the salvific power of the Holy Eucharist. The path indicates our path through life and hints at our St. Clare's location in the mountains.
Web site
We have set up some web pages on our parish site containing prayers for each stage of life.
https://stclare.ca/parish-life/service/knights/reverence-for-life/
Future plans
We aim to install a bench in front of the memorial and a permanent sign containing a QR code to the prayer website soon to encourage prayer and meditation at the site.

DO YOU EVER ASK YOURSELF...
What am I looking for in life?
What is the meaning of my life?
How can I be a better person?
What can I do about the loneliness I feel?
How can I come to know God's love?
How can I know the right path God has in store for me?
