Fifth Sunday in Eastertide

We Gather at Church and by Zoom

A Note from Pastor Sherri

Dear Friends,

The theme for Earth Day, 2024, which we celebrated on Monday, was Planet vs. Plastic. It was marked by a call to reduce our production and use of plastic by 60% by 2040. There are choices we can make and actions we can take each day to reduce our consumption of and thus the demand for plastic production. I encourage each of us to take these steps. For some of us, these steps and the honoring of Earth Day bring inspiration and motivation. For others, it adds to our overwhelm in the face of climate worries. For many of us it does both. Thus, I share with you a recent post by Katherine Hayhoe. She is an Atmospheric Scientist studying climate change, the lead scientist for the Nature Conservancy, and a distinguished Professor at Texas Tech. She comes from an evangelical background (a tradition not historically known for its commitment to earth care) and helps people understand that both science and faith call us to action on behalf of the planet. Her husband is a pastor.

Feeling overwhelmed by climate worries? You're not alone. By Katherine Hayhoe

“Step away from screens, immerse yourself in nature, make something with your hands, spend time with a furry friend, cherish your loved ones, or simply enjoy a quiet moment alone. These acts of self-care are not just good for us; I'm increasingly convinced they're essential.

Effective climate action isn't just about pushing for change; pacing ourselves is a necessity. This isn't a 100m sprint. It's the most extensive ultra-marathon in history, and our goal is to bring billions with us across the finish line. But it's also a relay: there's no way to make it to the end if we don't hand off the baton regularly and let someone else run it forward.

That's why spending time with the people we love, in the places we love, doing the things we love is so important. It fuels our hearts and strengthens our ability to continue to fight for a better future.”

This week may we take steps toward reducing our use of plastics and while following Katherine Hayhoe’s lead find renewal for the road ahead.

Blessings,

Sherri

Westminster Woods Reimagined Summer Programs

Camp Soulspring: Camp Soulspring is a faith-based Summer Camp that nurtures the social and spiritual development of young people by helping them create meaningful relationships between Self, Others, Nature, and God.

The Grove: Design your own custom Family Camp experience using the magic of Westminster Woods and the surrounding playground of West Sonoma County.

Woods to Waves: Continuing Westminster Woods' long trip-camp tradition, Woods to Waves gives a group of high schoolers the freedom to bond with one another through the shared discovery of Sonoma County's hidden creeks and corners, and through the collaborative sharing of their own stories and wisdom around the campfire.

Friendship Camp: Friendship Camp is a week for adults with developmental disabilities to express joy, create friendships, embrace nature, and worship God.

Inspire Services: Inspire invites guests of all backgrounds to ground themselves through a quiet and contemplative musical service, providing space for prayer and reflection. Our next Inspire Service is February 18th at Westminster Woods from 3-5pm! No registration required.

Summer Staff: Because many religious communities are often racially segregated, Westminster Woods intentionally hires a racially diverse staff that share a common love for God, demonstrating the common love that is possible between individuals who come from different backgrounds. Our staff is dedicated to providing transformational experiences for every camper.
