4 WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR HOME'S CURB APPEAL
1. Flip old mulch: The sun is hot. It'll melt your ice cream and burn your skin. It is relentless and chases everyone and everything, and mulch is no exception. As pretty as it looks when you first put it down-that nice dark brown carpet that weaves in and out of your plants-mulch will fade and lose its glory rather shortly. Over time, the color dies out and is replaced by an odd, almost graying hue that may still keep the weeds down but fails miserably in giving your yard the color pop it needs. Want to stop that from happening so quickly? Easy. Just use a rake-I like to drag a gravel rake across it-and turn it over. The mulch on the lower levels will have been less impacted by the weather, so rotate that stuff to the top. Afterwards, spray it down with some water. It'll look brand new. Do this every so often and you'll get better life out of your investment.
2.Add a colorful Flower Bed:
One of the quickest ways to add curb appeal and charm to your lawn is through landscaping. Adding a strategically-placed flower bed is a great, easy way to add a touch of color and life to your front yard. Flower beds work well in places like under windows, around trees, and along walkways or driveways. They can be simple and single-level, or fancily terraced.
3. Work on your bare spots:
Summer is a great time to get out and work on your yard. Bare spots in the yard can be caused my many common reasons. For some people it is a matter of too much shade, or even a common high traffic area that the kids run through. Regardless, treating the issue is a quick process.
A. Rake the soil - This will loosen the dirt below which will help the new grass grow. If you want your grass to be thicker you can use some type of turf builder over the area.
B. Spread the Seed - When you add the seed you will need to add about a quarter inch of soil on top of the new seed
C. Water - Water is one of the most important parts of growing new grass. You need to keep the soil very most. Once the grass starts to grow you can apply less water but in order to begin the process the soil needs to be nice and moist.
4. A gravel path is an attractive characteristic to add to your front or back garden. Curb appeal is a vitally important factor in the appearance of your home and a nice sculptured lawn with a pathway to the front door is a pleasing feature.Gravel has a certain quality to it which is easy to maintain. Foot steps on gravel also can be an advantage if you like to hear visitors approaching your door.

Dear Saunders Landscape Supply Clients,
As July and the "Dog days of summer" arrive, so will the need to water our lawns and plants! Up until now, our area has experienced plenty of help in this department from Mother Nature. However, temperatures have started creeping ever so closely to the century mark, and as one very wise person recently informed me that over the years Fathers Day begins what she calls the hot dry days of summer. So don't forget to water your thirsty lawns.
We have our customer service survey link in our newsletter and and on our site. Those of you who know me, personally know that customer service is extremely important to me and our business. Please take 3-5 minutes and complete our survey so that I can make the necessary improvements.

Aeration and Over Seeding
Core aeration is a critical step to a healthy lawn. Through out the year your lawn will become compacted and a layer of thatch will develop. This compaction and thatch blocks the essential elements: food, water, oxygen, and grass seed that your lawn needs. Aeration corrects this problem by pulling many small plugs of soil out of the lawn allowing the essential elements to get deep into the soil.
Benefits of Aeration and over seeding:
- Reduces soil compaction
- Allows food, water, and oxygen to get deeper in to the soil
- Helps decompose the thatch layer
- Improves root growth
- Increased seed germination through seed to soil contact
Fall aeration and seeding
Aeration in the fall and overseeding is essential to a healthy lawn. Severe weather conditions in 2010 has made aeration and seeding even more important than in past summers. Aeration will help break up thatch. That may have collected on the soil. Seed must have a surface to germinate in; aeration with the holes created and the soil plugs pulled, creates the soil conditions that are best for successful germination of seed. Fall aeration and seeding is the best way to have a re-birth of the lawn. Coupled with power seeding (also known as slit seeding), aeration and seeding will go a long way to having a successful planting of seed. Failing to aerate and planting of seed will slow down the process of a full healthy lawn. Lawn aeration and seeding in the fall will increase the thickness of the lawn. The thicker the lawn, the fewer the weeds! Aeration will allow the micronutrients to become available to the developing roots of the newly sown seed. Remember: golf courses aerate, often three to four times per year, and seed every fall! We strongly advise our customers to aerate and seed every fall.
Saunders Landscape Supply does offer Aeration and Seeding to select customers. Please call early to become apart of Saunders Five Step Service!

ADVISORY TO MULCH OR NOT TO MULCH Think its too late... think again! Mulch is a layer of material covering the soil to exclude sunlight. It is proven to be one of the most effective and desirable methods of preventing germination and growth of annual weeds. Since most seeds require sunlight to germinate, mulch is effective as a weed control. Mulches, depending on the material being used, has the added advantage of improving soil, bettering water retention, helps in breaking down clay soil, improves holding capacity of sandysoil and minimizes dust. The minerals and organic matter gradually released from decaying mulch feeds deficient soils, replacing nutrients taken up by roots as plants grow, often enhancing earthworm populations. Although mulching can require an initial investment, either in time, money or both, the longterm benefits reduces ongoing weed management costs. If you have prepared your site, killed orremoved weeds, follow immediately with an application of mulch. Regular hand pulling of weed seedlings may be all that is needed for weed management. Although mulch is effective against newly emerging weeds, it often fails to control established perennial weeds such asjohnsongrass, bermudagrass, and field bindweed. Remove these species manually as soon as they appear or by spraying glyphosate (Roundup). The primary benefits of using mulch are: Keeps the soil cooler in the heat of the summer. Prevents erosion of valuable topsoil. Conserves nitrogen by preventing sun from heating the soils surface. Coarse enough to allow easy water penetration. Heavy enough to stand strong winds. Protects roots from hard winter freezes. Using Gravel for Edging
1.Create your design; you can lay it out with a garden hose or spray paint.
2.Determine how deep you will need your trench to be. Keep in mind the depth of your edging material and the depth of any base material used. Saunders offers an online calulator so you can calculate how much you need. Just measure your length times the width and enter into the calculator at http://www.saundersls.com/sand
3. Excavate trench removing any rocks or roots that may cause leveling problems.
4.You can either lay your edging straight into the trench with out a leveling material or on a 1" or less of coarse sand for leveling ease. Go to http://www.saundersls.com/sand to calculate how much you need and order online 24/7.
4.Place edging material into trench leveling side-to-side and front to back as best as you can. (Natural stone will typically not be perfectly level.)
5.Continue laying until all of your edging is installed. If cuts are necessary you can cut the stone edging with a skill saw or chop saw equipped with a concrete/natural stone diamond blade or you can score (make a shallow cut with saw) and snap the waste stone off with a chisel and hammer. You could rent a hydraulic splitter or a diamond blade (typically rent these at a neighborhood equipment rental company). Using the splitter or chisel and hammer will leave you with a more natural split face vs. the saws will leave you with a smooth finish.
