SCFC Instrument Ground School Commences
SCFC's Spring 2020 Instrument Ground School commences
on Thursday, March 19, 2020 at 6:30 pm
.
The instrument ground school provides you with the required knowledge for the FAA's instrument airplane knowledge test (IRA) and, upon successful completion of the final exam, an endorsement to take the knowledge test. The
12-week course includes details on instrument flying that is valuable to instrument students, instrument-rated pilots, and instrument instructors alike.
Whether you are working on your instrument rating, or you are already an instrument pilot looking for a refresher, this course is for you.

Positioning in the Run-Up Area
While FAA rules and regulations say very little about how to position an airplane in the run-up area, SCFC encourages our pilots to understand these local customs and procedures.
Take a position as far into the area as possible to leave room for others,
angle the airplane towards the arrivals, so as to reduce prop blast and minimize noise on the boundary properties. Call SQL Tower on 119.0 to get a taxi instruction before leaving the run-up area.
Don't overreact to wind and point the nose into wind which doesn't significantly aid in cooling or affect an aircraft's stability.

SCFC Members Pay a Visit to The SFO Tower
It's safe to say that visiting the San Francisco Airport Tower doesn't happen without extensive planning. With a 360 degree view of the airport it's hard to hide the smile on your face, but it is more than just the view it is also a great learning experience. Mark Sherry, a Staff Specialist that works at SFO likes to say that "it's just like any other tower," but the more you learn about it, the less it feels that way. From controlling airplanes on the ground, to how they manage spacing between the approaches and departures are just some of the facts that make SFO a very special airport to operate.
As we started the tour, Mark said, "people think San Francisco is a big airport. We're not! Atlanta is big, Denver is big, Chicago is big. San Francisco is a small airport, that deals with a large load of traffic, which makes working here a special challenge." By the end of our tour, we were able to comprehend that statement a little better. SCFC thanks the Air Traffic Controllers at the San Francisco that shared with us an hour of their morning, and so much information. We all left feeling a little more knowledgeable and a little more comfortable with the interactions we have with our towers.

What might seem like a normal flight can change in an instant. Radio failures happen in the least opportune time, and your best-laid plans can change instantaneously. How are you going to handle the unexpected?
San Carlos Flight Center invites Michael Dutton and Stephen Heesacker, CFI to talk about what happens when your radios fail when outside as well as inside of the SFO Mode C vail and how to get back home safely. Come join for this unique opportunity to gain a new perspective on how to handle radio failures in flight.

SCFC: What made you want to start flight training?
AD:
I started my flight training to pursue a childhood dream of becoming an airline pilot. Even further, I wanted to experience general aviation firsthand as a private pilot, flying as a passenger in the small planes with my friends.
SCFC: What is the most challenging part of your flying adventure?
AD:
By far the most challenging part so far has been the strong crosswind landings that we encounter from time to time here at the San Carlos Airport.

hat's your favorite airplane you have flown so far?
AD:
Of the limited airplanes that I have been fortunate enough to fly in so far the Beechcraft Duchess has to be my favorite. Although I was only a passenger at the time, the experience I had, with my best friend in the left seat and coastal Florida to my right, motivated me to begin my own journey into aviation.

hat is your next big trip in a small aircraft?
AD:
Well, after I earn my Private Pilot Certificate I would love to be able to visit some of my family in Davis and make that adventure my first "big" trip. Later down the road I would love to fly to Catalina Island, as it was a dream of my late grandfather's to land on the "Airport in the Sky."

In eight years, we've grown from a tiny spin-off club to the largest, most dynamic flying club in the SF Bay Area. FOG Flies to Sacramento International
On February 8, 2020, FOG flew to the Sacramento International Airport. Despite strong headwinds along with a clear night illuminated by the full moon we enjoyed the flight.
When the group arrived, they had the experience of taxing and flying around the big airliners at the airport. Upon arriving at the Jet Center, they were greeted and treated with the first class service the Jet Center even extended their office hours to accommodate FOG's Pizza Party plans. Everyone had a great time, and FOG headed home.

FOG Wine Tasting a exciting 3 Day Experience
On March 27th, FOG will fly to the Santa Maria Airport and taxi up to the Radisson Hotel for the weekend adventure. That evening we will head over to a local secret winery in an industrial area near the airport for some of the most delicious wine you have tasted. In fact, they have been listed amongst the top 10 in the world by National Geographic. Dinner that night will be at
Trattoria Uliveto.
The following day we will travel by van to explore the wineries around the Santa Inez area and then stroll into Solvang for a flavor of Denmark. You d
on't want to miss this event. Everyone last year loved the trip and this year will be even better.

FOG Vandenburg Launch Patrol Update
Keep your eyes peeled on the Vandenberg launch schedule as it frequently changes. Firefly Aerospace is scheduled to launch a Firefly Alpha rocket as part of the Maiden Flight mission. The launch window for the Test Flight mission is
on Tue, Mar 31st, 2020, 5:00 PM PDT from the Space Launch Complex 2W at the Vandenberg AFB in California. As the launch approaches stay tuned for updates.
