"Build Your Own" BBQ
April 6 (Sat) 1:00pm
 It's SCFC Barbecue Time! We haven't fired up the big barbecue since before winter tried to drown us. With the arrival of Spring, it's definitely time to gather on the first Saturday of April and celebrate.
The April BBQ is a joint event co-sponsored by EAA Chapter 20 at San Carlos. Come to the seminar "Building Your Own Airplane" at noon in the SCFC classroom, then join us downstairs in the ramp for "Build Your Own Nachos and Hot Dogs". There will be some cool locally-owned and built aircraft on display.
We'll also be hosting our annual Lost & Found Rummage Sale to raise money for the Upwind Foundation, so be sure to come and claim lost belongings or acquire someone else's. This will be your first chance to pick up your 7th Anniversary pin.

Renters Insurance: A Love Story
"While taxiing around the hangar, I left plenty of clearance between the wing tip and the building -- or so I thought. One shattered strobe light assembly later, I was re-thinking my depth perception. Although it seemed like only minor damage, the aircraft was grounded and new parts had to be acquired from distant suppliers. My normal $300 rental of the aircraft suddenly bloomed to nearly 10 times that amount. In a quick flash of panic, I saw my future rent payments whirling away.
"Then I remembered my renter's insurance. My $150 policy became a rampart against the unthinkable. It covered all the repair costs.
"I love you renter's insurance."

A/C Checkout? Try Our Training Guide
If it's time for you to try a different make or model of airplane, you should know about the aircraft checkout process. For many of our aircraft, you'll first need to spend some time with the airplane POH (available online on our website), complete the POH Review Form (available online), and complete some ground and flight training with a Flight Instructor. What can you expect from the instructor during a new aircraft checkout? Take a look at the aircraft Training Guide (you guessed it, available online). It outlines the important pieces of knowledge you'll need to know, and skills you'll need to work toward mastering.

Member Profile: Nathan Flores
 SCFC: Congratulations on passing your Private Pilot Checkride! Who inspired you to become a pilot?
NF:
My dad was the inspiration to become a pilot - he loved flying and passed that passion on to me. As a 20 year veteran, he flew helicopters and planes in the military followed by a career as an airline pilot. Now that he can no longer act as PIC, he's looking forward to being a passenger.
SCFC: Who was your lucky first passenger?
NF: My first passenger is a friend who was a loadmaster/crew chief in the Air Force during the Vietnam War. He really enjoyed flying in a Cessna which he described as "much quieter and more comfortable than a military aircraft." With the backdrop of a perfectly clear and calm day, we did a Bay Tour and even flew midfield over SFO!
SCFC: What are your aviation goals?
NF: My aviation goals are to continue to work towards mastery of flying skills. Even after becoming a private pilot, I feel there are opportunities to get better in every aspect of aviation. Currently, I'm working towards earning a high performance endorsement and maybe someday I will work towards an IFR rating.
SCFC: What are your hobbies outside of aviation?
NF: Outside of aviation, my hobbies include almost anything fitness or outdoor related. I enjoy weightlifting, mountain biking, hiking and mountain climbing.

Meet the new SCFC Seminar Coordinator
It takes a team of dedicated pilots and organizers to make our Safety Seminar program so successful. Two seminars per week, live streamed video, access via website and podcast! If you have an idea for a great guest speaker, or a safety topic that needs to be address, you should meet Aditya Munshi, our new Safety Seminar Coordinator. Aditya is a private pilot, recent graduate of the Upwind Summer Scholarship Program, who wanted to use his pilot savvy and give back to the club. He coordinates speakers, arranges for the program, works with the Media Team to see that it streams correctly, and follows it all up with a 5-Second Survey to gauge the results. You may see Aditya introducing the presenter at an upcoming safety seminar. If so, stop him to thank him for the work he does and let him know what you think of the program.

FLAG: Challenges and Rewards of an Instrument Rating
April 10 (Wed) 7:00pm
 The IFR Rating is a logical next step for pilots after becoming a private pilot. Transitioning from flying with your eyes outside on the natural horizon to flying by reference to instruments is a big shift. There are new charts, new procedures, and a new set of regulations that need to be learned. Understanding nuances of weather and ATC communications becomes even more relevant for an IFR pilot.
Although the IFR Rating is challenging, earning it will definitely make
 you a safer pilot! It also opens up new options for departing on your cross country trip even when the weather is less than VFR.
Join Alyce Gershenson, Mike Lloyd, and Beth Kirkpatrick as they share their experience of working towards an IFR Rating. They will share the challenges they encountered and the rewards of the rating.

Full Moon Flyers: Black Bear Diner, Los Banos
Apr 19 (Fri), 7:00pm
April 20th is the Full Moon night. This month we will hold the Full Moon Flyer Flight on Friday, April 19 and meet at Black Bear Diner near Los Banos Airport (KLSN) at 7:00 pm. This is an awesome flight and includes skill building such as crossing some dark hills at night (safe altitude awareness practice!). The central valley is one of the most peaceful places to fly at night.

FlyOutGroup Goes to Death Valley
Apr 26 - 28 (Fri - Sun)
This month, FOG is traveling to the lowest elevation airport in the United States - Furnace Creek, Death Valley. Depending on the rains, wild flower blooms at 3000 to 5000 feet elevations on the upper desert slopes, canyons, and higher valleys.
Accommodations book quickly so book your hotels, motels or campground now. Furnace Creek has 2 hotels, The Inn at Death Valley and The Ranch at Death Valley. Stovepipe Wells 1 Motel at Stovepipe Wells Village has a nearby airstrip which has limited tiedowns.

5-Day Yellowstone Mountain Trip Is Filling Up!
June 26 - 30 (Wed - Sun)
 We began our countdown to June's FOG Yellowstone trip last month and you all have responded! This trip lasts for five days and four nights of challenging, spectacular, exhilarating flight. If you are interested in obtaining your mountain flying endorsement, this is your opportunity to fly the Rocky Mountains with a CFI on board and in the company of several other planes. We launch early in the morning on Wednesday, June 26 and return late Sunday, June 30.
We have room for 10 pilots and 5 of those slots are already reserved. You can register for this event online at sancarlosflight.com and call the SCFC front desk to put down your deposit.
