NEW BEGINNING WITH OLD APPROACH

This year's Metta Center mentee was Altynai Myrzabekova, who joined us from Kyrgyzstan. Altynai helped SEEDS with online and print marketing, wrote many articles for us and also supported the flow of our office.

One of Altynai's projects this summer was to write a reflection about her reaction to the conflict resolution services that SEEDS provides. She produced a wonderful piece of writing and SEEDS invites you to read it by clicking the link above.

We are extremely grateful that Altynai joined us this summer and are looking forward to following her progress in Kyrgyzstan!

Greetings!

Hands with SeedlingThis summer SEEDS is working diligently to provide conflict resolution services in the community!  Our restorative justice program is developing a restorative practices curriculum for future trainings, our training program has four trainings scheduled for August alone, our community mediation program is wrapping up the On the Same Page training for mediators and our courts mediation program is hosting a Small Claims Law training next week!

All of this movement is being supported by a great group of interns at SEEDS:  Pato Draves, Altynai Myrzabekova, Will Pasley, Yari Sandel, Grant Shubin and D'Arcy Wright.  Thank you all for spending your summer with SEEDS!!

In this issue, we are sharing an article that Altynai wrote reflecting on the conflict resolution work that SEEDS is doing, along with a quick RJ update, and a list of upcoming events and workshops.

Thanks for your interest in SEEDS!

RJ & Circle Process Seminar

On July 23, SEEDS hosted the first Intro to Restorative Justice and Circle seminar at the Berkeley Public Library (central branch). Diana Gray, SEEDS Board Member, openned up the seminar with a brief synopsis of SEEDS' work.  This was followed by an informative lecture on RJ given by Professor Julie Shackford-Bradley; take a look at the presentation slides here. Denis Curtis from Catholic Charities closed the restorative justice info portion of this seminar by presenting a case study of a recent Restorative Group Conference (RGC) involving youth from Richmond High School.

After the presentations, volunteer Yari Sandel led a community building circle for all attendees.  For many, this was their first circle experience. Some were shocked that they felt safe enough to share so much in circle with strangers.

Special thanks to Jonathan Bradley, RJ Community Outreach Coordinator, and to the volunteer energy that made this happen: Harriet Whitman Lee, Will Pasley, Julie Shackford-Bradley, Yari Sandel, and Diana Gray (Board Member).

Have you ever intuitively felt that what a person is saying is not what they really mean? If so, you were probably right, as 93% of all interpersonal communication is received through non-verbal signals. The concept of 'intuition' is often our way of explaining unknown nonverbal signals that we haven't yet learned to interpret.

This workshop will give you an awareness of how we are impacted by body language as well as how you can align your nonverbal signals to help you get your message through. The skills that are trained are beneficial for professionals who wish to improve their ability to deepen the understanding of people around us as well as the ability to influence them.
