February 2011

Welcome to RiverQuest Charters/Muskegon River Lodge

Greetings!

Hard to believe that spring fishing and melting snow is scarcely six weeks away. So, it's time to think February, one of our favorite times of year at the Muskegon River Lodge and on the river. We're pleased to introduce Mike Schmidt, one of the leading fly tiers in the Midwest. We met Mike at one of our winter trade shows some year back and have fished his flies with considerable success on the Muskegon. He's a gentleman and graciously shares the recipe for the Conrad Sculpin, a most effective streamer pattern.

Muskegon River Lodge winter entry

The limbs of the spruce hang low after a recent area snowfall. White cascades from limb to limb as a squirrel scampers through the fresh powder--his brown body stark against the snow.

The beauty of winter refreshes the soul. Snowshoeing beneath winter's star sun, gliding down a cross country ski trail, or tracing colored fly line against a world of white in search of steelhead-all spell winter at the Lodge.

After a day afield or on the river, or perhaps even simply a day cozied by the fire with a great book, crowning the evening with a skillfully prepared fillet or ever-delicious veal cutlets, rack of lamb, or baked Halibut is sure to please and satisfy.

Sound appealing? Our new menu will be online very soon; featuring some of the aforementioned specials and some mouthwatering new choices. For information and bookings, please call 616.293.0501 or email.

RiverQuest Charters Dr. Eastway

Winter's hold is strong along the banks of the Muskegon River, and though winter seems firmly locked in place, the sun's rays have begun their ascent north. Increased sunlight triggers changes within steelhead, stirring the call to reproduce. And so, steelhead begin to move upstream. February, a lost month to many, is, in fact, the steelhead anglers' secret month. Often, the largest steelhead of the year find their way before the camera during February. Salmon fry have begun to hatch, and the first hatch of the year--black stone flies--emerge on sunny afternoons, clambering onto a branch here and a stone there.

So, celebrate the snow and the month of February, for the rewards can be great. The river valley is asleep, but the steelhead aren't. Choice runs and pools are yours with all the promise fresh chrome affords. Pictured is Dr. Eastway with a well-earned January steelhead. The Conrad Sculpin is a big, meaty, articulated beast of a fly, though as far as big flies go, it is relatively easy to cast as there is little material to soak up and hold water. All you have to worry about when casting is a bit of wind resistance to the head.  This is a fly that is best fished on a full sinking line with a leader not exceeding three feet.  Once you have the fly out, the retrieve that works the best tends to be short quick retrieves in between pauses that are long enough to let the marabou "breathe" in the water.  Slap it down close to undercut banks, boulders, or wood and watch the big fish come out to for what they think will be an easy meal.

Michael Schmidt, friend and contract fly tier to RiverQuest Charters,  is a:

Contract tier and tying instructor for Mad River Outfitters;

Signature tier for Jag Fly Co./Steelhead Alley Outfitters; and

A Performance Flies Pro Staff member.

Mike's flies are regularly featured in fly fishing magazines and other media.  We fish Mike's flies and recommend them highly.

Michael's company, Anglers Choice Flies, is a commercial fly tying company that has been based out of the Dublin, Ohio area for well over a decade. With a large variety of both established and innovative patterns on the books, owner/tier, Mike Schmidt, strives to push the limits of current materials and create "the next generation" of flies. Every pattern from his vise is thoroughly water--tested to ensure they perform as designed before they are made available.

The Wingless Crow
The Wingless Crow
By Charles Fergus

February is the month of the year that my mind seems to stray. By the time the second month of the year begins, the last year of sport seems distant and the new year of sport is still a way out. As the snow piles up, I begin to ponder about the past and the future. My mind drifts to and fro from songbirds to mayflies. From small creeks to large tailwaters, from walks in the woods looking for spring woodcock, to the tug of the last fish of the fall, I think of blooming wild flowers and autumn colors. My mind wanders to distract me from the gray Michigan winter, or at least that is how I justify my wandering brain.

Charles Fergus's book, The Wingless Crow, is a book about wandering. This book contains 33 crisply written essays on being outdoors. Fergus has written for Audubon, Country Journal, and Shooting Sportsman Magazines.

The essay topics range from sitting on a stump listening to the natural world, to viewing lighting. He writes of mushrooms and insects, of science and country life. These essays will allow you to stroll forests and glens without the heft of winter coats and mukluks. Best of all, Fergus's writing will give your mind things to digest. He is an observer of natural history, and his essays illustrate the world he views. His eyes can be harsh, yet compassionate, as he writes of being outdoors. Published by Lyons and Burford Press, this paperback volume retails for $14.95.

The Wingless Crow is a book about being outdoors. It is a book about listening, watching, and contemplating the world around us. It is a book that will get you through February and into March's steelhead run.
