INCARCERATION DOESN'T DEFINE US GRADUATION
The Danville Police Department is helping people who were formerly incarcerated or heading down the wrong path find their way back into the community through relationships and resources.

10 people graduated from the Incarceration Doesn’t Define Us (I.D.D.U) program Tuesday morning.

“We wanted to focus on something to help people not return to jail,” said Ashtyn Foddrell, Community Relations Liaison. “We wanted to focus on how we could do restorative justice and how we could really bring that recidivism rate down, and we thought this was the perfect way to do it.”
The eight-week program helps previously incarcerated individuals get connected to resources that are available to them. They learned about budgeting, housing and education options, interview skills, resume building, and more.

If you know anybody that was incarcerated and needs help being inserted back into society, reach out to Ashtyn Foddrell. Class will restart up August 1st and is held at our Parker Road location.

AVERETT UNIVERSITY'S COUGAR BUSINESS FEST 2023
On behalf of Averett University's Center for Community Engagement and Career Competitiveness (CCECC), we would like to invite you to register for our annual Cougar Business Fest on Tuesday, August 15th from 12pm-3pm on Main Campus in the Carrington Recreational Center (Gym).

Cougar Business Fest provides a space where our local businesses can connect with and market your goods and services to our students as well as our faculty, staff, and the entire community. Our ultimate goal is two-fold: 1.) to showcase our local businesses and help you flourish, and 2.) to advertise your open part-time job and internship opportunities to our students. We invite you to show our 300+ incoming students that Danville cares about them and welcomes them to our City. Our research has found that many Averett students are unaware of the many businesses in Danville, yet they would like to shop and stay local. The Festival will be a perfect opportunity to bridge the University and our community.

All participants will be provided a space with a rectangular table and two chairs in the Carrington Gym. Vendors may begin setting up at 10am on event day. We encourage every vendor to provide some sort of signage or branding for your table. We also require each vendor to have some sort of “giveaway” at the event (food samples, coupons, hygiene products, dental care samples, pens, pads, tumblers, or other items).

• If you are a food service vendor, you may want to consider offering free samples of your menu items (small samples of donuts, cakes, BBQ, sandwiches, etc.) to market yourselves to these potential new shoppers. We do have electricity capacity, so make sure to note that need in the survey.

• If you are a non-profit, we would love to have you attend and promote your mission as well as your volunteer/internship needs to these future servant leaders.

• If you are a business with part-time positions or internship possibilities for students, we would also invite you to table at the Festival to promote your job openings.

There will be signs to shepherd you to parking for the event. The festival coincides with Averett’s opening convocation for all students, staff, and faculty, so you will have hundreds of potential new clients and shoppers. For your convenience, it may be easiest to drop off your supplies near the Carrington Gym. Averett's address is 420 West Main Street. You can turn on the Woodland Drive One-Way and then park in the designated spaces provided.

Alcohol, drugs, guns or weapons of any kind are NOT allowed to be sold or given away on Averett’s campus for safety and health reasons.

Please complete the form below to register by Friday, August 11, 2023.

BIG LAUNCH CHALLENGE PITCH COMPETITION 2023
The Angel Capital Association (ACA) Angel University and The Launch Place are bringing together angel investors and entrepreneurs to learn, share and network. This event offers a unique, immersive experience connecting angel investors and entrepreneurs.

This year's Big Launch Challenge (BLC) will be part of an all-day event starting with the ACA's Angel University and ending with the BLC pitch competition. This year the Big Launch Challenge is being held at the end of the ACA's Southeast Regional meeting. The ACA, the world's largest professional organization for accredited investors, Southeast meeting will focus on angel investing through workshops and keynotes covering regional entrepreneurial ecosystem building, different models and structures of angel investing, the changing face of angels and investor networks, syndication across state lines and more.

The Big Launch Challenge, a competition targeting the best startups in the country, is a unique opportunity to see 10 leading startups as they compete for $15,000 in prize money. Over the past 11 years of hosting this competition, The Launch Place has awarded $189,000 to 19 companies. The Launch Place strives to foster an environment for new and serial entrepreneurs in which they can raise capital and have access to support services they need to take their products and/or solutions into the marketplace.

We are very excited to host the competition in person again and to hear the thought-provoking pitches.”
