Great Lakes Delegation, led by Reps. Dingell and Huizenga and Sen. Stabenow Calls for Release of GLRI Report

Forty-eight House Members and Senators sent a bicameral and bipartisan letter to EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt last Friday urging the EPA's Great Lakes Interagency Task Force (IATF) to release the FY 2016 report to Congress on the recent activities and accomplishments of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) as soon as possible.  This report, which is required under law, remains a critical tool for Members of Congress, federal agencies, local officials, and the public to determine how best to utilize GLRI funding to restore the environmental and economic health of the Great Lakes, and was last released in June of 2016. Leading the letter were Representatives Debbie Dingell (MI) and Bill Huizenga (MI), and Senator Debbie Stabenow (MI). Sen. Stabenow and Rep. Huizenga currently serve as Co-Chairs of the Senate and House Great Lakes Task Force, of which Rep. Dingell is a member.  The full text of the letter can be viewed here .

House Committee Disapproves Nuclear Waste Site on Great Lakes

The House Energy and Commerce Committee marked up a handful of energy-related bills last week, including the Nuclear Waste Policy Amendments Act of 2017 ( H.R. 3053), which would prioritize the development of the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository in Nevada. Among the amendments that were adopted to H.R. 3053 during the markup was an amendment offered by House Great Lakes Task Force members Reps. Fred Upton (MI) and Debbie Dingell (MI) that expresses the sense of Congress that the governments of the U.S. and Canada should not allow permanent or long-term storage of spent nuclear fuel or radioactive waste near the Great Lakes. The amendment is in response to the Ontario Power Generation's (OPG) proposal to build a nuclear waste storage facility on the Canadian side of Lake Ontario. Earlier this summer, thirty-two House Members sent a bipartisan letter to Secretary of State Rex Tillerson voicing their concerns with OPG's proposal.  It is unclear as to when or if H.R. 3053 might be considered by the full House.
