House Committee Disapproves Nuclear Waste Site on Great Lakes
The House Energy and Commerce Committee marked up a handful of energy-related bills last week, including the Nuclear Waste Policy Amendments Act of 2017 (
H.R. 3053), which would prioritize the development of the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository in Nevada. Among the amendments that were adopted to H.R. 3053 during the markup was an amendment offered by House Great Lakes Task Force members Reps. Fred Upton (MI) and Debbie Dingell (MI) that expresses the sense of Congress that the governments of the U.S. and Canada should not allow permanent or long-term storage of spent nuclear fuel or radioactive waste near the Great Lakes. The amendment is in response to the Ontario Power Generation's (OPG) proposal to build a nuclear waste storage facility on the Canadian side of Lake Ontario. Earlier this summer, thirty-two House Members sent a bipartisan
letter to Secretary of State Rex Tillerson voicing their concerns with OPG's proposal. It is unclear as to when or if H.R. 3053 might be considered by the full House.
