NEMWI to Hold Briefing on Lead and Safe Drinking Water this Wednesday
What: A Congressional briefing entitled "The Lead Crisis and Safe Drinking Water: Lessons from Flint and Other Drinking Water Emergencies"
When: Wednesday, May 3, 2017 from 2:00 - 3:00 p.m.
Where: 421 Cannon House Office Building
With the ongoing water crisis in Flint, Michigan and other lead emergencies throughout the country, the importance of revisiting and strengthening the Lead and Copper Rule has been amplified. Please join the
Northeast-Midwest Institute's Safe Drinking Water Research and Policy Program and its distinguished guests for a briefing about weaknesses in our drinking water regulations and strategies for improving the protection provided by our drinking water regulations. Topics that will be covered include:
- The weaknesses that have been exposed in the Lead and Copper Rule through these lead in water crises;
- The relationship between water quality and the 2014-2015 Legionnaire's disease outbreak in Flint, MI;
- Key legislative proposals such as H.R. 1974, the "No Lead Act" and H.R. 2094, the "Lead Free Schools Act;" and
- The issues public water systems face as they take their own initiative to improve water quality and plan for new requirements.

Omnibus Legislation: Top-Line Items for the NEMW Region
Congress has unveiled the fiscal year 2017 Omnibus Appropriations bill, which will provide discretionary funding levels for the government for the remainder of the fiscal year ending on September 30, 2017. The bill provides for a total of $1.163 trillion in total spending, of which $1.07 trillion is base spending, $93.5 billion is Overseas Contingency Operations (OCO) funding, and $8.2 billion is for emergency and disaster funding in response to fires, floods, and other extreme weather events that have happened during 2017. The Northeast Midwest Institute prepared this
fact sheet outlining funding levels and provisions that will have the greatest impact on the Northeast-Midwest region. Funding levels for additional priority programs will be updated on our website

House Subcommittee to Hold Hearing on Maritime Transportation Regulations
The House Transportation and Infrastructure's Subcommittee on the Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation will hold a hearing entitled
"Maritime Transportation Regulatory Programs." The hearing is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 3, 2017, in 2167 Rayburn House Office Building. The hearing can be viewed on the Committee's website here. Panelists that will testify include:
