Last week Mike Sullivan and Ash Conn attended the 2017 PBR Australia finals in Sydney. From all reports this was an outstanding event yet again.
We would like to thank our customers for attending and the PBR for taking care of everyone on the night. We could not have asked for a better outcome as a business and also a PBR fan, with all the exposure on the night being centred on the chutes and the high excitement.
From left: Dean Cleary and his sister Donna Burtenshaw, James Dwyer with Tamika, Mike Sullivan, David Burtenshaw and Ash Conn.
Not only was it great brand awareness for Neil's we also had some special customers in our VIP box. It just so happened that the parents of the overall winner on the night Nathan Burtenshaw were able to watch their son ride and win from prime seating ...
I think that's cool in itself, but to top it off we had 6 time PBR Finals attendee and Neil's sponsored, North Queensland Cowboy, Sam O'Connor back for another year and although it wasn't his night, he had some rank bulls to break in. I saw his stock draw prior and they were as you would expect at this calibre of event, awesome athletes. Sam always does our brand proud and is a great representation of our company and PBR.
In saying all this, our customers and PBR fans were treated to a special moment and it came in the way of a fairy tale ending for 8 times PBR Australian Finalist, APRA Australian Bull riding Champ, PBR Iron Cowboy winner and a cowboy with a list of achievements as long as your arm, Troy Wilkinson as he took out his first PBR championship.
Troy is another guy we are proud to sponsor on his way to achieving his goals and future dreams, he is a great representation of what all cowboys should be. Talent only goes so far in high impact sport, if you don't know how to use it, physical toughness only lasts while your body holds out but passion, drive, respect and intelligence bring it all together.
Troy deserves to be a champion but only because he works for it! I will give you some quick examples of why he is not only a great representation of Neil's & the PBR but more importantly himself.
As an example of the style of man Troy is, last year I introduced Troy to a mate of mine (An old cowboy that rode Broncs, bulls and bareback when we were younger, he was and is a true champion and Cowboy himself) we were at a touring pro event up the coast. I could not have stopped Troy at a more inconvenient time, he was behind the chutes getting ready to get on his second bull for the night and at the time we weren't his sponsor we were just standing there catching up on old times.
Troy stopped and introduced them, he shook Shane's hand and talked as long as he could, he was respectful and genuine. He didn't really know Me or Shane, he could have acted any way at all, but this is him. Shane said when Troy walked away "That kid is cowboy to the bone", he said all these young guys could, should take this in. We watched him get on and we watched him ride. No matter what the outcome on the night, good or bad, Troy is in charge, no one else is to blame and he does his best.
This is the make of a true champion.
Last year at this very event in Sydney I had a friend of mine, Andrew Vicary (One of the owners of Gulf Western Oil) up behind the chutes on a chute tour, Troy was getting on and I was listening to one of the PBR people explaining to Andrew what the Cowboys were doing, at this point I heard Troy yell out my name, I was doing a chute tour with Andrew that's all, nothing else but Troy didn't care his bull was acting up a bit so he asked if I could give him a spot and put some pounds on his rope ... he was getting the job done, that's all that mattered, and he did. Nothing is too much trouble whether it's an interview for ads or dropping everything to make my Friends and work colleagues in the US feel welcome at a huge event in Sioux Falls SD.
Anyway, Good Luck in the US mate ... you had a great end to the year, now the new year starts again.
Thank you to Glen and his team from PBR Australia for all your extra effort, we never leave an event feeling let down, and yes I'll try to get to one this year but it's hard to get a ticket off Mike Sullivan, he is a PBR junkie!
Also this week we have released a new section to the newsletter trying to highlight some of the many good Neil's / Gulf Western Oil dealers or customers we have Australia wide, so this week our spotlight is on Gatton QLD ...
