Greetings!
Bob's Head ShotWe have been waiting for good news!

It seems the deepest downturn may be reaching the bottom. From the news headlines, contributions from donors are rebounding.  However, government funding is still going through its restrictive support for many agencies. Foundation grants are improving and it isn't so much of a portfolio crisis as many of those portfolios have recovered  close to their past levels.

Changing the board culture

One of the most often discussed topics is how to change the board culture. Boards, like all groups, develop a culture over time; sometimes it becomes positively engaged, frequently the board culture has a negative impact, and loses sight of its role. The first steps are to objectively analyze the culture, conduct a board assessment and identify the board's strengths, challenges and priorities.  The following should be the focus of the board:

  • Become accountable to the organization and its critical mission
  • Understand and succeed in its role of governance
  • Establish systems for meaningful oversight
  • Develop necessary committee structures and responsibilities
  • Appropriately involve board members in product fundraising
  • Attract additional quality board members
  • Renew its culture to better reflect the mission and core values
  • Provide attainable goals and develop performance measurements for the CEO/ED.

Steps for Implementing board member assessment:

  1. Determine the method to be used, written survey or personal interviews.
  2. Inform the board members in advance and give background information. Emphasize confidentiality.
  3. For mail survey, include a deadline for return. Use online when available.
  4. For email survey, consider using Survey Monkey or Zoomerang. http://www.surveymonkey.com or http://www.zoomerang.com
  5. For interviews, schedule 45 minutes to an hour at a convent location for the board member.
  6. When it is too difficult, use phone interview.
  7. Assemble the answers and provide a report to the board.

Study finds donations to be up in 2011 but with a online wrinkle

In the 2011 Cygnus Donor Survey 10 there is considerable optimism among respondents in this year's study; 79% expect to give the same or more to charitable causes this year, while only 7% will give less, as will 53% of the survey's oldest donors (65+). This is the first survey year in which the majority of donors in every age category will give online.

Direct mail seems to be declining in popularity; online giving is on the rise - though it is important to remember that direct mail is often the impetus for giving online. 65% of survey respondents plan to make at least one gift online on a charity's website this year. Age is an important factor here, not only because (as expected) most young donors (86%) will give this way, but also because the majority of donors between 35 and 64 will give online (69%).
