More than 300 Asian American community members gathered at a non-partisan Mayoral Candidate Forum hosted by the Pan Asian Voter Empowerment (PAVE) Coalition and Asian Americans Advancing Justice | Chicago.
Seven out of nine mayoral candidates attended: State Representative Kam Buckner, Congressman Jesús ‘Chuy’ García, Ja'Mal Green, Cook County Commissioner Brandon Johnson, Alderman Roderick Sawyer, Paul Vallas, and Dr. Willie Wilson. Alderwoman Sophia King had planned to attend but was unable to join due to illness and Mayor Lori Lightfoot was invited but declined due to another commitment.
Community members and leaders from the PAVE Coalition shared personal testimonies and asked candidates to answer questions about six policy priorities: public safety, language access, senior services, affordable housing, immigrant rights, and education equity.
If you missed the forum or would like to rewatch part of the discussion, CAN TV’s recording is available to watch on YouTube by clicking here.

2023 Lunar New Year Gala To Honor Anne Shimojima and MJ Olszewski
Anne Shimojima and Michael James “MJ” Olszewski will represent the Japanese American community at the Asian American Coalition of Chicago’s 40th Annual Lunar New Year Celebration on Saturday, February 18, 2023.
Through her decades-long work as a professional storyteller and elementary school librarian, Anne has introduced audiences throughout the United States to Japanese and Japanese American history and culture. She brought her family’s incarceration story to Tokyo, under a program sponsored by the government of Japan. Anne was awarded the Foreign Minister’s Commendation by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Japan, and was recently named a recipient of Japan’s Order of the Rising Sun, Silver Rays.
MJ Olszewski is a junior at Amundsen High School in Chicago, where he carries a challenging load of honors classes. He enjoys playing basketball in his spare time, and hopes to pursue a career in sports media. MJ volunteers as a youth basketball coach at the Sansei Yonsei Athletic Association, where he shares his love of the sport with children aged five and up. He also participates in activities that honor and support his community, such as beautifying Montrose Cemetery for the annual Memorial Day service, or packing meals at Feed My Starving Children events.
Hosted by the Vietnamese American Community, the 40th Annual Lunar New Year Celebration will be held on February 18 at the Hyatt Regency O’Hare (9300 Bryn Mawr Avenue, Rosemont).
Tickets are $110 each, or $1,100 per table of 10. Ticket purchasers can also attend afternoon forums on education and business topics, as well as a combined religious service.

SEATS SOLD OUT! - Chicago Day of Remembrance 2023
~ Sunday, February 19th, 2023 ~
Teacher workshop: 12:00-1:00 PM
Main program: 1:30-3:00 PM
Reception: 3:00-5:00 PM
In person at the Chicago History Museum, 1601 N. Clark St.
Full details available at https://chicagodor.org/
Signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on February 19, 1942, Executive Order 9066 led to the incarceration of 120,000 Japanese Americans during WWII. Every year, the Japanese American community in Chicago comes together to commemorate E.O. 9066 as a reminder of the fragility of civil liberties in times of crisis and the importance of remaining vigilant in protecting the rights and freedoms of all.
This year's program features the world premiere of Full Spectrum Features’ Resettlement: Chicago Story, a short historical film and educational website.
Resettlement: Chicago Story tells an intergenerational story of the Yamamoto family several years after camp, as they struggle to rebuild their lives and make ends meet through their family dry cleaning business. The film’s companion immersive learning website builds upon both the characters and historical events of incarceration and resettlement introduced in the film to create the “world” through which viewers can engage with facts, figures, and important social themes that extend from this history.
After the film and website premiere, Reina Higashitani (film director and professor at the New American Film School, Arizona State University) and Dr. Helen Cho (professor of Asian American Studies, Northwestern University) will discuss their engagement with Resettlement and how they approach this unique history as filmmaker, media scholar, and educators.
This year’s DOR event will focus on accessibility. Audio Description, Open Captions, CART (Live) Captioning, and ASL Interpretation will be included throughout the program. The venue and bathrooms are wheelchair accessible with ramps, elevators and electronic doors throughout the building.
Before the event, from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m., Full Spectrum Features will host a workshop for teachers on the history of Japanese American incarceration and resettlement. An honorarium is available for teachers.
After the main program, Full Spectrum Features will host a premiere reception from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. Refreshments and appetizers will be included; potluck contributions are welcome.
This event is sponsored by the Chicago Japanese American Council, Chicago Japanese American Historical Society, JACL Chicago, Japanese American Service Committee, and Japanese Mutual Aid Society of Chicago.
