 (N)ICE DAM WINTER!!!

Yes, we have an ice dam, but fortunately no water infiltration or damage. Not everyone is as lucky. Below is a link to a This Old House article on Ice Dams. Their solutions may not work for everyone but they explain how ice dams form. Hope everyone is staying safe, warm and away from falling icicles.

The Haddam Historical Society will host the 42nd Connecticut Spring Antiques Show on March 21 and 22, 2015 at the Hartford Armory, 360 Broad Street, Hartford, CT. The show is one of the country's most important venues of early American furniture and accessories. Leading dealers will display outstanding examples of furniture, textiles, porcelain, pottery, silver, pewter, fine art, prints and more.  Hours on Saturday are 10-5 and Sunday 11-4. Admission is $15 and parking is free. For additional information visit www.ctspringantiquesshow.com

As in previous years, the 2015 show will feature educational presentations by experts in American decorative arts. Long-time Connecticut historian, writer, and curator William "Bill" Hosley will lead a special tour of the show "Browsing with Bill" on Saturday, March 21 at 3:00 PM.  An authority on the culture and furnishings of the Connecticut River Valley, Hosley has lectured throughout the country, is a renowned and lively speaker, a longtime museum curator and a passionate champion of decorative arts and early New England material culture.

On Sunday, March 22 at 2 PM, collector, scholar, and mocha enthusiast Jonathan Rickard will discuss mocha ware and its mysterious origins.  Author of Mocha and Related Dipped Wares, 1770-1939, Rickards' talk promises to be colorful.

Another special feature of this year's show - designed to encourage young collectors to attend - is that visitors ages 35 and younger will be admitted free on Sunday March 22rd. The show also includes a catered tea room, full bar and free parking in the parking garage directly adjacent to the Armory.

Connecticut Flower and Garden Show is at the Hartford Convention Center this Thursday through Sunday, February 19-22. Connecticut's Historic Gardens will have a booth at the show with volunteers from Haddam Historical Society on Friday and Saturday. Stop by and say hello.

POSTER ART CONTEST WINNER 2015

Connecticut's Historic Gardens group is pleased to announce West Simsbury, Connecticut artist Lori Racicot-Burrous as the winner of its 2015 Historic Gardens Day Poster Art Contest.

Launched in 2012, the Historic Gardens Day Poster Art Contest gives local artists a chance to showcase their talents while advertising this important, statewide event. The contest aims to join Connecticut artists with the group's historically significant homes and gardens.  Along with a cash prize, the contest offers the winning artist widespread exposure - at the annual Connecticut Flower & Garden Show (February 19-22, 2015, booth 413), at each of the 14 Connecticut's Historic Gardens sites throughout the year, and at Connecticut's Historic Gardens Day itself, an event that attracts thousands of garden lovers throughout the state and beyond. This year's Historic Gardens Day takes place on Sunday, June 28, 12-4 pm.

Contest winner Lori Racicot-Burrous has been painting since she was a child, but only recently began painting full-time on a professional level. She has a B.A. in business from the University of Texas at Dallas, a Master of Education from Texas A & M Commerce and she taught elementary school for many years.  Whether she is painting barnyard animals, landscapes, florals or still-lifes, she uses multiple layers of color to create paintings full of texture with an impressionistic feel. She is inspired by the artists she studies - such as Wolf Kahn, Bonnard and Richard Schmid. Lori is a member of Simsbury Open Studios, West Hartford Art League, and the Canton Artist Guild.  She currently is showing her work at Infinity Music Hall Gallery in Norfolk (January 8 to April 4, 2015), Gallery on the Green in Canton, and at the Slater Memorial Museum in Norwich, CT.  You can see more of her work at www.LoriRacicot.com and Facebook.com/LoriRacicotArt.
