Our
flagship project: African Development Bank
|
|
Guidelines and
Screening Tools to Support the Mainstreaming of Climate Change: a
chance to influence African development for a generation to
come.
Our approach is tailored to meet the requirements of particular
user groups in the Bank. Drawing upon a wide range of tools, we
will develop an in-house climate risk-adaptation screening tool and
a web-based knowledge base. A Guidance Manual and on-site training
are key to success.

Director's
reflections
Stocktaking is in the news,
from reviews of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change to
progress in achieving the Millennium Development
Goals.
My personal scan looks back on
wonderful years leading the Stockholm Environment Institute in
Oxford. Aware of rapidly changing demands that require a dynamic
and flexible approach, I have established GCAP, and am excited
about the road ahead. I particularly enjoyed a week in Tunis with
the AfDB, listening to people grapple with the challenge of climate
change in Africa. It recalled my first professional position in
Kenya.
One message I'd like to
instill in our team and clients. GCAP exists not to be 'another
consultancy' but to do something unique, something we couldn't do
any other way. Climate adaptation is a fast-moving field.
Knowledge-led strategies must find real solutions.

GCAP
is go!
We
established our operational headquarters in May, with Paul Watkiss,
Mohamed Hamza and Tom Downing as directors. All leading experts in
their fields!
We've already achieved major milestones, with $1 million in project
contracts. Our flagship project is with the African Development
Bank and we organised the first part of our Adaptation Academy. We
also have the first investors. So we are fully operational.
Over the next three months our focus is on building our core team
in Oxford, establishing great partnerships (especially in
Bangladesh and Africa), and working with clients who are interested
in our services.

Adaptation Academy: our first foundation
course
Climate adaptation requires new knowledge and skills - utilising
theory and practice, methodology and tools from the natural and
social sciences. And collaborative learning to support
organisational change at various levels. A cornerstone of our
strategy is the Adaptation Academy.
Our first Foundation Course was held this summer, a collaboration
with the Climate Systems Analysis Group, at the University of Cape
Town and the Oxford office of the Stockholm Environment Institute.
The 3 weeks was hands-on, working with climate data and future
envelopes, risk and vulnerability assessment, and adaptation
planning and decision-making.
Mo Hamza leads development of the Academy. Thanks for this year's
course in particular to the CSAG team and Anna Taylor, Sukaina
Bharwani and Tahia Devisscher from the SEI.
We are moving forward with a formal partnership for 2011 and
beyond. Get in touch with Mo for details:
