We're so close to meeting our annual appeal goal (less than $3,000 away) -- can you help get us over the finish line? As you know, the Friends support the library's programming.

Your donation pays for the programs in this newsletter; they would not exist without your donation.

Take a break from the hectic, often frenzied, election news coverage to study, reflect, and increase your understanding of our rights as citizens of the United States.

2 pm

(except the 28th when it is a double feature at 12 and 2)

Meeting Room

Join us on Thursdays at 2 pm for “GPL goes to the Movies”. Due to licensing restrictions we can’t share the names of the movies, but we can give you the following hints:

March 7

The remarkable story of the Agojie, the all-female unit of warriors who protected the African Kingdom of Dahomey in the 1800s with skills and ferocity unlike anything the world has ever seen. Inspired by true events, it follows the emotionally epic journey of General Nanisca as she trains the next generation of recruits and prepares them for battle against an enemy determined to obliterate their way of life. Some things are worth fighting for. PG-13

March 14

Hundreds of thousands of cats roam the metropolis of Istanbul freely. For thousands of years they've wandered in and out of people's lives, becoming an essential part of the communities that make the city so rich. Claiming no owners, these animals live between two worlds, neither wild nor tame, and they bring joy and purpose to those people they choose to adopt. In Istanbul, cats are the mirrors to the people, allowing them to reflect on their lives in ways nothing else could. NR

March 21

Doug MacRay is the leader of a Boston bank robber gang but not cut from the same cloth as his fellow thieves. When Doug falls into a passionate romance with the bank manager briefly taken hostage in their last heist, he wants out of this life and out of the town. As the Feds close in and the crew questions his loyalty, he has one of two choices: betray his friends or lose the woman he loves. R

March 28: (Double Header) 12pm, 2pm

The long-awaited follow-up to the highest-grossing romantic comedy of all time. The film reveals a Portokalos family secret that will bring the beloved characters back together for an even bigger and Greeker wedding. Did Grandma Have a Filling Station? is the result of research into women's businesses in Greenfield in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, exploring how they have contributed to commerce, agriculture, social and religious life, education, and on the most basic level, raising each generation of Greenfield’s citizens. By shining a light on their stories, the past can be brought to life; exploring their history and achievements can inspire the current generation in many ways.

Master, Slave, Husband, Wife

Tuesday, March 19, 6:30 pm,

Conference Room

Join us at the GPL for our bi-monthly book discussion as we explore different authors and genres, on Tuesday, March 19, at 6:30 pm in the GPL Conference Room. This month we are exploring History with Ilyon Woo’s book Master, Slave, Husband, Wife: an epic journey from slavery to freedom.

Woo’s book is the remarkable true story of Ellen and William Craft, who escaped slavery through daring, determination, and disguise, with Ellen passing as a wealthy, disabled White man and William posing as "his" slave.

In 1848, a year of international democratic revolt, a young, enslaved couple, Ellen and William Craft, achieved one of the boldest feats of self-emancipation in history. Posing as master and slave, while sustained by their love as husband and wife, they made their escape together across more than 1,000 miles, riding steamboats, carriages, and trains that took them from bondage in Georgia to the free states of the North.

Copies of the book are available at the library.

February with these new virtual author talks

Nina Totenberg

The Power of Friendship

Wednesday, Mar 6th, 4pm

You are invited to an intimate conversation with Nina Totenberg as she talks about her nearly fifty-year friendship with Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and her book, Dinners With Ruth: A Memoir on the Power of Friendships

Dinners with Ruth is an extraordinary account of two women who paved the way for future generations by tearing down professional and legal barriers. It is also an intimate memoir of the power of friendships as women began to pry open career doors and transform the workplace. Ruth and Nina saw each other not only through personal joys but also illness, loss, and widowhood. They shared not only a love of opera, but also of shopping, as they instinctively understood that clothes were armor for women who wanted to be taken seriously in a workplace dominated by men. During Ruth’s last year, they shared so many small dinners that Saturdays were “reserved for Ruth” in Nina’s house. Inspiring and revelatory, Dinners with Ruth is a moving story of the joy and true meaning of friendship!

For more information, and to register for this and other upcoming talks, go to https://libraryc.org/greenfieldpubliclibrary/21486/register

Each talk features the opportunity to participate in author Q&A or pre-submit questions during registration! Copies of these books are available at the Library.

Christopher Paoilini

20 Years of Dragon Riding in YA Fantasy

Thursday, Mar 14, 4pm

Join us as we chat with master storyteller and internationally bestselling author Christopher Paolini about his return to the World of Eragon with Murtagh.

A stunning continuation of the epic fantasy, Murtagh is set a year after the events of the Inheritance Cycle. The world is no longer safe for the Dragon Rider Murtagh and his dragon, Thorn. An evil king has been toppled, and they are left to face the consequences of the reluctant role they played in his reign of terror. Now they are hated and alone, exiled to the outskirts of society.

Throughout the land, hushed voices whisper of brittle ground and a faint scent of brimstone in the air—and Murtagh senses that something wicked lurks in the shadows of Alagaësia. So begins an epic journey into lands both familiar and untraveled, where Murtagh and Thorn must use every weapon in their arsenal, from brains to brawn, to find and outwit a mysterious witch. A witch who is much more than she seems.

Murtagh is the perfect book to enter the World of Eragon for the first time . . . or to joyfully return.

Madeline Miller

On Retelling Greek Classics

Thursday, Mar 21, 7pm

You’re invited to a fascinating exploratory conversation with Madeline Miller, bestselling author of The Song of Achilles and Circe, as she chats with us about her body of work and her process in retelling Greek classics into modern epics in fiction.

Miller is known for writing mythological realism. Miller's novels re-imagine stories from Greek mythology, while focusing on themes that she considers timeless, like dysfunctional families and homesickness.

The Song of Achilles, Miller's debut novel, set in Greece, tells the story from Patroclus' point of view and the bond that grew between him and Achilles. Circe, Miller's second novel is a modern reimagining told from the perspective of Circe, an enchantress in Greek mythology who is featured in Homer's Odyssey.
