Bishop Dan's Sermon - February 28, 2016

As I was processing out of Church after this sermon, a disillusioned Vietnam vet, who said his heart is still "torn apart," handed me a note that said,"I don't' know if God exists, but if so, I want it to be the God you spoke of this morning." Wanting God to exist is way better than just holding the opinion God exists without it really mattering. I pray that the god Moses met on Horeb is a god you want to exist and that such  a god does.

Today's lesson from Exodus is the biggest zinger of a surprise in all religious literature.
Everything in the Bible turns on this. But in order for us to get it, we need to do a little trick with our minds. We have to forget about everything that happens in the Bible leading up to this moment.

The reason is: those beautiful and deeply true myths and legends would not be written until hundreds of years after the event in today's lesson. This text would do a lot more to shape those stories than they could shape this event.

So forget all that. Let me tell you another story instead - the story of religion before Moses met God on Mt. Horeb.   Read More

"Invitation to Go Deeper"

Come be still in the Presence of God! Join us in the Chapel at Community Lutheran Church on Saturday, March 12 from 9:00 AM to Noon. There will be a brief teaching, time for silence, exploration of a spiritual discipline, and time to share. Come explore with others the contemplative dimension of life. RSVP to Ken Larson at 702-675-5690 (call or text).  Our own Douglas Gregg [husband of Canon Catherine] is helping with these potential quiet days that we hope to hold at various churches.  Contact him at  dgregg@cfdm.org or 702-485-5215 if you are interested in this event or other offerings of contemplative practices.

WEBINAR :  MODELS FOR VESTRY LEADERSHIP OF FAITH FORMATION

March 8, 2016   7:00 pm - 8:00 pm  EST

So your vestry has a handle on the financials. But how are you doing as leaders and stewards of your church's faith formation ministries? In this webinar the Center for the Ministry of Teaching posits four "developmental stages" of vestry leadership of faith formation. Director Lisa Kimball and digital missioner Kyle Oliver will pose important questions and make practical suggestions for each approach.

1. Disciples together -- Leaders must be learners, so how is your vestry growing in faith together?

2. Leader liaisons -- Many vestries appoint representatives to oversee or check in with different ministries. How are your faith formation liaisons trained and commissioned for this work?

3. Strategic consultants -- Issues of faith formation should be a part of your big-picture organizational thinking and day-to-day administrative practice. Do faith formation leaders have a voice in these conversations?

4. Integrated partners -- Christian educator Maria Harris argues that the entire corporate life of our churches (prayer, teaching, proclamation, service, fellowship) forms us into the people of God. How can your vestry partner with formation ministers to embed reflection and growth into all your church does?

Presented by Lisa Kimball and Kyle Oliver, Center for the Ministry of Teaching, Virginia Theological Seminary

A Faith for the Future
by Jesse Zink

The New  Church's Teaching  series has been one of the most recognizable and useful series of books in the Episcopal Church. With the launch of the  Church's Teachings for a Changing World  series, visionary Episcopal thinkers and leaders have teamed up to write a new set of books, grounded and thoughtful enough for seminarians and leaders, concise and accessible enough for newcomers, with a host of discussion resources that help readers to dig deep.

In this third volume, scholar and priest Jesse Zink unites tradition and contemporary thinking to introduce the essentials of Episcopal theology. What's the story of God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, creation and humanity, baptism, church, Eucharist, mission, and the life after death? Find out how Episcopalians have explored those questions for centuries and discover answers-and new questions-of your own.

Each chapter takes a different aspect of Christian faith-God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, Creation and Humanity, Baptism, Church, Eucharist, Mission, and the Hope of the World to Come-and links history and tradition with real world experience. Read the first chapter here
