Our 2024 Symposium

Was a Huge Success!

If you Missed it, No Worries... The Recordings are

Available for Purchase

Last weekend's Symposium on Death and Bereavement Studies was fantastic. Our presenters brought in so much rich content that it was hard to take it in all at once, which is why many attendees will be listening to the recordings to catch whatever they might have missed.

If you weren't registered for the event, you can still watch all the symposium presentations by purchasing the recording package. Click HERE for details.

Preying on the Dying:

Private Equity Gets Rich in Hospice Care

The hospice industry began with small, nonprofit providers whose mission was to care for the dying and assure that they faced the end of life with dignity. But the industry has evolved in ways that CMS may not have been prepared for. Now, for-profit hospices dominate the industry, with Wall Street players, driven by the logic of profit maximization, buying up nonprofit agencies and consolidating them into large chains with hundreds of locations. For-profit hospice agencies report profit margins three times as high as those earned by nonprofits. Research shows that, on average, the quantity and quality of care suffer in for-profit hospices compared to nonprofit providers. READ MORE...

How NOT to Talk About Suicide

"Social stigma around suicide can amplify shame for people experiencing suicidality — which includes suicidal thoughts, plans and attempts — making seeking help or talking about it more difficult, said Urszula Klich, a clinical psychologist in Atlanta." READ MORE...

Chatbot Talks to Dead People?

This is old news from back in July, but worth mentioning here. With so many spurious "grief support" and "grief education" programs being offered today, it was only a matter of time before these kinds of offerings hit a new low. READ MORE...

Taoism, the Body

and The Cosmos

Accounts of Taoism begin sometime in the fourth century BCE, starting with the text “Tao Te Ching,” attributed to Lao Tzu. Though scholars do not believe there was an actual person called Lao Tzu, this figure would become the model for bodily practice. Taoists would later develop rituals designed to mirror their body with that of Lao Tzu’s as a way to align themselves with the Tao, or the source of all things. READ MORE...

Are You a Professional Chaplain

Who Does Not Identify with

Outmoded Religious Chaplaincy Models?

If you are a professional spiritual care provider who is specifically trained (or currently training) in chaplaincy, please take a peek at our Chaplains Outside the Box Facebook Group. This is a private group for those who understand that chaplaincy is not about promoting religion, and that chaplains are not the same as pastors or ministers. FYI, if you request to join, be sure to answer the membership questions in order for your request to be approved.

Interested in Hospice or

Clinical Chaplaincy as a Career?

We recommend these excellent university programs:

Marian University (Masters degree or certificate)

Graduate Theological Union (inter-spiritual chaplaincy program)

Grief Therapy Master Class with Dr. Robert Neimeyer

This class is fully approved for professional continuing education credits by the American Psychological Association, and is also suitable for classroom use in training students and professionals in the art of working with issues of loss in psychotherapy in a way that is informed by clinical research on trauma, attachment, and the human quest for meaning in the wake of devastating life events.
