Happy Autumn Equinox!

As the days get shorter and colder, I go into overdrive preparing for winter workshops and teaching Fall university classes. This year I'm adding something new... learning how to bake sour dough bread as a new winter hobby (thank you Cynthia for inspiring me).

But what I'm really excited about this season is our fourth annual Symposium on Death and Bereavement Studies (see related story below). We've got some incredibly interesting and unique presenters this year, including the great progressive theologian and former Domincan priest, Matthew Fox. We'll also be talking about psychedelic therapy, dreamwork for dying, the spiritual worlds of dying chidlren, and many other fascinating topics. And as always, there are CE credits available!

The Dual Process Model for Bereavement

As some of you know, one of today's most important theories in bereavement care is "the dual process model." You can find a simple explanation of it HERE, and in this video, Dr. Daniel shares a hand-on process that helps you track how your energy moves between loss and restoration orientation. A very helpful tool!

How Effective is Counseling?

"The U.S. has reached peak therapy. Counseling has become fodder for hit books, podcasts, and movies. Professional athletes, celebrities, and politicians routinely go public with their mental health struggles. And everyone is talking—correctly or not—in the language of therapy, peppering conversations with references to gaslighting, toxic people, and boundaries." READ MORE...

The Radical Inclusive Religion

of Burning Man

"Zvika Krieger never intended to go to rabbinical school. But each time he led the Burning Man Shabbat service... dozens would line up to thank him. For some, it was their first religious service in decades." READ MORE...

Maya Spirituality

Finds New Footing

“Maya spiritual practice never died because the elders did the ceremonies in a clandestine way — very private, very closed off, very secretive,” said Xiquín, who recently published a book on Maya persecution.” READ MORE...

The Telephone Game

In Bart Ehrman’s remarkable book, Jesus Interrupted, he describes how the stories that formed early Christianity were spread through the Roman empire and beyond. A merchant in a village in a village meets a traveling stranger who preaches about the life, death and miracles of a man named Jesus, and how belief in the new religion surrounding Jesus will lead to peace and salvation. The merchant decides to follow this religion, and converts his wife and children. His wife tells the neighbors, and they convert too, and then one of the neighbor travels to a nearby town and tells those people about it. At the same time, the followers of Paul and later evangelists are traveling to dozens of villages and telling the same story, which gets re-told again and again by the new converts.  READ MORE...

Competitive Grieving

by Larry Patten

. Are we judged by the absence or presence of tears?

. Are we judged for how quickly it takes to return to “normal?” (What is “normal?”)

. Do you admire (or resent) the colleague who apparently dealt with a loved one’s death by plunging back into the pressures of a job? Our cultural values celebrate those who work hard, right?

. Are you bothered by (or even angry at) the friend moping around the house: the one who can’t “get their act together” a week/month/year after the death? Don’t most companies give employees three bereavement days (or maybe a full work week) . . . and therefore isn’t that a sufficient period of time for mourning?

Which death is the most difficult for the living grievers? Which person, a year after a loved one has died, should be in “better shape” and “moved on” in their life?
