I don't often comment on politics and current events here, but I feel compelled to make this statement. As someone whose work focuses on identifying toxic theologies, the only way I’m able to look at the Israel/Palestine situation is through the lens of religious scholarship (vs. having any political, tribal or cultural affiliations).

I hope you will read the article included this month about religious rationalizations on both sides. It's a paper by a graduate student in international conflict resolution, offering a balanced view of the ways both sides use religious belief to support their positions.

When a debate is rooted in religious mythology, nobody ever wins. The only solution is for all views to peacefully co-exist, but when one party wants to dominate the other, each believing that "God" is on their side, how can peace ever be possible?

A Beautiful Perspective on Death with Dignity

From NPR's This American Life, Amy Bloom tells the story of her husband Brian, getting Alzheimer's and wanting assisted suicide. Her search to find a way to do that led her to Dignitas in Switzerland. Hear this intimate and frank account of the experience they go through, excerpted from her book, In Love. LISTEN HERE

Seven Bereavement Themes

In a 2019 paper on complicated grief therapy by a team of renowned grief researchers, the authors identified "seven bereavement themes" for clinicians to work with when supporting bereaved clients. The published article may be too academic for most readers of this newsletter, but the themes are simple and clear. So we've pulled them out and created a bulleted list that can serve as a useful reference tool for those who are struggling with grief. Read the list HERE.

Religious Rationalization

on Both Sides

For those interested in an academic analysis of the religious roots of the Israel/Palestine situation, this article by Stephanie Claire Mitchell at Portland State University looks at it through the lens of religious history and conflict resolution. READ MORE...

The Nones, Dones

and SBNRs

In many countries around the world, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of people who are unaffiliated with any organized religion. These so-called “nones" — atheists, agnostics, or nothing in particular — comprise 30% or more of the adult population in the U.S. and Canada, as well as numerous European countries. Managing Loss and Grief During the Holidays

ONLINE - November 1, 2023

7:00 pm Eastern/ 5 pm Pacific

If you are mourning the death of a loved one or a loss of any kind (including divorce, job loss, pet loss or any major life transition), your grief can be more difficult and your sadness more pronounced during the Winter holidays. We all respond to that sadness in different ways, and methods of coping can span a vast spectrum. Some choose to skip the holidays altogether, abandoning traditional family customs that are painful reminders of holidays past. Others continue – and enhance – those traditions by including departed loved ones in new rituals specifically designed to bring their presence into the festivities.

A Ceremony for Remembering our Loved Ones

During the Winter Holidays

If you find the holiday season to be especially difficult after the loss of your loved one(s), you are not alone. It can be a sad and triggering time of year, but it can also bring reminders of joy and hope for healing.

One of the most helpful things we can do to navigate the grief journey is to connect with a supportive community to share memories and creative, meaningful rituals for restoration. And it is in that spirit that we invite you to join us for a unique memorial event in which we will celebrate the lives of our loved ones, and the new lives we are creating as we move forward in our healing.

This event is IN-PERSON, and free of charge!
