September 26, 2016 "Europa macht Schule" celebrates ten-year anniversary
DAAD and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) held a ceremony at the Berlin Wall memorial site to mark the ten-year anniversary of the program Europa macht Schule, which connects European exchange students with German pupils through joint projects with the opportunity to gain insight into each others culture. Since the start of the program, more than 1,500 European exchange students and over 35,000 German pupils have participated in Europa macht Schule. DAAD President Margret Wintermantel sees it as a successful example of how to integrate higher education programs in primary education. The children learn a different culture firsthand from a personal perspective. They also learn about possibilities to study abroad later in their studies. The success of the program has also been replicated outside of Germany; Czech Republic, Poland, Finland, Lithuania and Austria have also introduced similar programs. Its diverse programming, from speeches and presentations to working groups and a talent fair, brought in a record number of participants and exhibitors alike. More than 500 people attended the conference, including DAAD President Margret Wintermantel and Vice President Joybrato Mukherjee as well as Prof. Marcia McNutt, President of the National Academy of Sciences. Further distinguished guests included: State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Research and Education, Cornelia Quennet-Thielen and the Minister of Research, Education and the Arts of the State of Baden-Wuerttemberg, Theresia Bauer, as well as five members of the Bundestag committee for Research, Education and Technology Assessment, who gave talks and mingled with the early-career researchers during networking events. A workshop for non-German-speakers was attended by roughly 60 people interested in research careers in Germany. The variety of events at the conference made it possible to take an in-depth look at the vast benefits Germany offers as a location for scientific research. Dr. Sabine Becker, an MIT chemist, said that scientific funding is much easier to secure in Germany than in the U.S., offering the example that 40 percent of grant proposals are accepted by DFG, compared 12 percent by the NIH. More impressions on Twitter under the hashtag: #2016GAIN DAAD offers grants for one to three months in all academic disciplines to scholars at US and Canadian institutions of higher education to pursue research at universities, libraries, archives, institutes or laboratories in Germany. The aim of this particular program is to support short-term research stays and thus promote the exchange of experience and networking amongst colleagues. The highest ranking among these is LMU Munich in 30th place, followed by Uni Heidelberg (43rd) and TU Munich (46th). These are followed by three Berlin universities, including Humboldt University taking 57th place, Freie Universität 75th and Technische Uni, making the list for the first time ever, came in 82nd. The THE ranking indicates that Germany is a top performer, with 41 universities among the top 600 and many rising stars like TU Berlin, whereas other European countries like France, Spain and Italy are losing ground on this front. Germanys Excellence Initiative is seen to have a positive effect on the reputation of research at German universities. The Study Foundation of the Berlin House of Representatives sponsors a scholarship program for students and young scholars of all fields from France, Great Britain, the USA, and the successor states of the former Soviet Union who want to use research facilities in Berlin. Fifteen grants will be awarded for the academic year 2017/18. The grants amount to 1,100 EUR for graduate and doctoral students and 1,630 EUR for post-doctoral scholars per month including the rent for an apartment in the International Study Center Berlin.
