American Linguist Mark L. Louden Receives DAAD’s Grimm Prize

DAAD awarded the prestigious Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm Prize to the linguist Prof. Mark L. Louden from the University of Wisconsin-Madison at a ceremony in Bayreuth on September 27th. The prize includes a 10,000 euro grant and a four-week research stay in Germany.

DAAD President Margret Wintermantel was delighted to honor Prof. Louden, an internationally renowned linguist and expert on German language islands in the US. His scientific research is characterized by a holistic approach to sociolinguistic, historical, grammatical and phonetic issues.

Dr. Louden, Professor of German Linguistics and Director of the Max Kade Institute for German-American Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, is considered one of the leading researchers of the German language in America. He extensively examines minority languages like Pennsylvania Dutch and Yiddish and also acts as an interpreter and mediator for the Amish and Old Mennonite communities.

GCRI New York supports invention of early autism detection

On August 30th, 2016, the German Center for Research and Innovation (GCRI) New York hosted the Falling Walls Lab, a global forum for innovators to pitch their research and business ideas. Ten entrepreneurs, innovators, and researchers presented their ground-breaking projects, business plans, entrepreneurial and social initiatives in three-minute pitches. These ten finalists were selected from a diverse applicant pool to compete at GCRI in New York, one of approximately 50 Falling Walls Lab locations worldwide. The winner this year was Oren Miron with his presentation on “Breaking the Wall of Autism.”

Miron, a Harvard Medical School graduate introduced a device that could detect autism at birth with the use of a brain test, which screens for hearing impairment. While conducting research he discovered that his product could be particularly useful in developing countries where autism is often incorrectly diagnosed. Miron won a scholarship that includes a flight to Berlin to participate in the international Falling Walls Lab.

The two runners-up of the New York Lab were Ya-El Mandel-Portnoy with her presentation on “Breaking the Wall of Treating Atrial Fibrillation” and Heather Painter, who spoke about “Breaking the Wall of Intolerance” with the help of an app she helped create for refugees in Germany. They too have the opportunity to fly to Berlin to compete against the winners of the other worldwide Falling Walls Labs and participate in the Falling Walls Conference on November 9, the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

The Falling Walls Conference is an annual gathering of forward-thinking individuals from over 80 countries. Each year twenty of the world’s leading scientists are invited to Berlin to present their current breakthrough research. The aim of the conference is to:
• Identify solutions to global challenges and discover international breakthrough research.
• Connect outstanding researchers from different disciplines.
• Build bridges between business, academia, politics, and the arts.
• Communicate the latest scientific findings to a broader audience.
• Inspire people to break down walls in science and society.
