Helping Refugees on the Way to College DAAD and the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) are committed to the rapid integration of bright minds who have come to Germany as refugees. In order to determine eligibility and facilitate registration at schools, the required entrance exams, tests for foreign students (TestAS) and assessment procedures by uni-assist will be offered to refugees for free. Germany's universities can play an important role in the integration of refugees by providing a new perspective to young, talented people. In turn, refugees who wish to study bring different language skills and abilities to the table. The placement of refugees in the German higher education system begins with counseling and aptitude tests, such as TestAS, which is designed for all international students applying for undergraduate studies in Germany. TestAS measures general and subject-specific abilities that are necessary to successfully study at a German university. At the request of the BMBF, DAAD, uni-assist and g.a.s.t. (an organisation promoting academic study preparation and test development) have developed informational material for refugees, such as Arabic translations of application procedures. More information on the entire range of higher education opportunities for refugees can be found at: https://www.study-in.de/de/refugees/ and www.daad.de/fluechtlinge.

German Universities Excel in Internationalization Rankings The internationalization of German universities has been ranked highly in the British Council study "The Shape of Global Higher Education," which compares the conditions for the internationalization of higher education systems in 26 countries. Germany distinguishes itself from the US and UK with a particularly well-balanced combination of internationalization strategies, structure of higher education and quality assurance as well as mobility and support measures. The study analyzed indicators pertaining to three groups of criteria: "openness and academic mobility", "quality assurance and recognition of studies" and "access to the university system and sustainability." The study highlights the favorable conditions for international students in Germany, not only in terms of access to higher education or funding, but also to the labor market. Foreign students can extend their residency permit for up to 18 months after graduation to find a suitable job. German universities are also characterized by a high degree of openness and strong international research partnerships. The British Council study was presented at the Going Global forum for international higher education in Johannesburg. Learn more about the forum at: https://www.britishcouncil.org/going-global.
