January 8, 2016 RISE Germany announces a new partnership with the German Center for Research and Innovation Foundation DAAD's RISE Germany program has begun an exciting new partnership with the German Center for Research and Innovation (GCRI), which will fund five research internships matching highly qualified sophomores from North America with top universities and research institutions in Germany. GCRI is the most accessible and visible portal in North America to the German research and innovation landscape, bringing together key stakeholders in the public and private sectors. Every year, we receive more offers for research internships from German universities who would like to participate in the RISE Germany program, and more applications from North American and British students than we can shoulder with our RISE budget. DAAD has funds for about 180 scholarships, yet we have been able to invite over 300 RISE participants over the past seven years thanks to partnerships with the German Research Foundation, universities and the Association of Chemical Industries, for example. DAAD is looking for additional partners to co-fund its RISE program. Are you interested in offering co-financing? Please contact us.
DAAD initiates programs to integrate refugees at German universities In order to facilitate access to universities for refugees, DAAD has introduced a long-term strategy supported by funds from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). Roughly 100 million euros will be made available over the next four years to support and advise refugees on application procedures, improve their study skills and help them integrate into the campus setting. 27 million euros from this fund have been earmarked for 2016. The first program, titled "Welcome - Students Engaged with Refugees", is geared toward current students participating in initiatives organized by campus groups or university administration that assist the integration of refugees. This program arranges tutorials, informational materials, translations, counseling and language courses. The second program "Integra" serves to prepare refugees for university study by offering subject-specific prep classes at Studienkollegs. In addition to these measures, DAAD recently created a website to inform refugees about the possibilities for study available to them in Germany: www.study-in.de/information-for-refugees/.
