April Volunteer Opportunities

UMass Chan employees have the option of volunteering their time through the UMass Chan Cares volunteer paid time off (Volunteer PTO) initiative. Employees may use use up to 16 hours of scheduled work time per year to support their favorite causes and institutions as volunteers. Those interested in volunteering may 1) volunteer individually, 2) seek assistance from the Office of Community and Government Relations (OCGR) to arrange a departmental volunteer effort, or 3) participate in one of the school-wide monthly volunteer activities organized by OCGR. April volunteer opportunities include:


Working for Worcester- City View STEAM Lab

Saturday, April 13 from 9am-1pm at Working for Worcester's City View Elementary School site. We are excited to help them build a STEAM lab! Tasks involve building chairs, stools, and tables, rearranging STEAM supplies, and assembly of teacher's area.


Because this event takes place outside of working hours, volunteer PTO is not available.

Lake Park- Community Cleanup

Wednesday, April 17 from 10am-12pm at Lake Park for a community cleanup. This event is in partnership with the Regional Environment Council and UMass Chan's Sustainability Office. Tasks include cleaning up trash and general landscaping tasks in the park,


Volunteer PTO is available with prior supervisor approval.

UMass Chan in the Community - ScienceLIVE

UMass Chan’s ScienceLIVE program has partnered with the Shrewsbury Public Library and Leonora Martinez-Nunez, a scientific illustrator from the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Outreach Office, to bring a series of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) activities to students during February and April vacations. Together, staff and volunteers lead 24 students (~8-12 years old) in the observation of the breadth and beauty of the diverse world of fungi, which they then used as inspiration to create works of art. During April school vacation, there will be two events. One will focus on macroscopic and microscopic species in our environment and the second one will be on the importance of DNA in living things.

Community Baby Shower - April 13th

On Saturday April 13 from 11:30am to 4:30pm, UMass Chan Medical School and the Glō Mom Initiative will be hosting a Community Baby Shower during Black Maternal Health Week. The Community Baby Shower connects women in need with subject matter experts on prenatal care, lactation, childbirth, exercise, nutrition and postpartum health with an effort to reduce the gap in accessible prenatal care, gathering in a central location for onsite assistance free of charge.


The event will be held in the Albert Sherman Center, Multi-Purpose Room.

Wellness Fair - April 11th

On Thursday April 11 from 10AM to 1PM, the Office of Well-Being invites staff, faculty and students to interact with various UMass Chan departments and local businesses that holistically support the well-being of the UMass Chan community. Participate in FREE fitness classes in the Fitness Center, raffles, demos, crafts, meditations, ergonomic assessments, IT Help Desk assessments, blood pressure and other biometrics screenings, book swaps, healthy snacks, games, and so much more. The event will be held in the Albert Sherman Center, Multi-Purpose Room
