City Hall Fall door
A Fond Farewell, but not Goodbye~

Summer has been suddenly ushered out as the leaves turn glorious hues of autumn blaze colors. This annual seasonal change is also synonymous with election season. After ten years of elected service to Spring Park, I have chosen not to seek re-election this fall. It has been an honor and pleasure to serve the City these past ten years.

Instead of reflecting back and writing a boastful list of past accomplishments that I probably shouldn't take credit for anyway, I will leave you with the one thing that was most valuable to me while in office - input from residents. I urge residents of Spring Park to reach out to your elected city council members more often. It is far easier for city officials to make decisions with input from the folks most affected. If you have an idea for a city improvement or would like to make a suggestion, contact your elected officials. Better yet, come to a city council meeting and speak at the public forum.

Although I am stepping away from elected office at this time, I will continue to be active in the community in other ways. My passion for public service can't be turned off with the quick flick of a switch. Thank you for an amazing ten years. I'll see you around Our Fair City...

Your Mayor (for a few more months anyway)~

Property Taxes~

What is TNT?
TNT stands for Truth in Taxation. It's a process required by state law that is intended to inform property owners about who is planning to tax their individual piece of property in the coming year - and how much they propose to tax it. By November 24 each year, county auditors send property owners a "notice of proposed property taxes" that shows a snapshot of the taxes attached to their property by counties, cities, schools, etc. Part of the TNT process requires that cities with populations over 500 invite the public to a meeting where they can comment on those proposed taxes. The City of Spring Park will hold their TNT meeting at the regular council meeting on December 1, 2014, 7:30 p.m., at City Hall.

Back to School

It's back to school for our students. Students are often times waiting at bus stops in the darkness. Drivers, please be extra watchful of children who may be waiting roadside.  And remember, no traffic may pass a school bus in either direction when the stop arm is extended and red lights are flashing. Flashing amber lights are a warning that the bus is preparing to stop. Be alert to children crossing the street in front of the bus to board and leave. Please stop at least 20 feet from the bus.

Stay safe out there!

Water Damage Repair

This past spring, there was A LOT of rain dumped in Minnesota. If water filled up your unfinished basement, you were probably able to remove the water without lasting damage.

However, if you had water in a finished basement, you might have had to remove flooring, drywall, and insulation. In some severe cases, some of the wood framing may have had to be removed and replaced.

If you were one of the unfortunate homeowners that had to remove drywall, insulation, and/or framing material, you most likely needed a building permit.

If you are unsure if a permit was required for your water damage repair project, please call our office at 952-442-7520.

Heating Equipment Fires ~
Did you know?

The leading factor contributing to heating equipment fires was
failure to clean - principally creosote - from solid fueled equipment primarily chimneys. Portable or fixed space heaters, including wood stoves, were involved in one-third of home heating fires and four out of five home heating deaths. Half of home heating fire deaths resulted from fires caused by heating equipment too close to things that can burn, such as upholstered furniture, clothing, mattresses and bedding.

In most years, heating equipment is the second leading cause of home fires, fire deaths, and fire injuries. Remember your smoke alarm(s) and replacing batteries. Fixed or portable space heaters are involved in about 4 out of 5 heating death fires.

Stay safe this fall and double check your heating equipment.

Water Quality Update

The City of Spring Park was recently designated as a State Superfund site, which makes us eligible for financial assistance from the State of Minnesota for upgrades to the City's water treatment plant to remove excess TCE from the water. The State is hopeful that the money will be available by next summer and that construction on the upgrades will begin soon thereafter. The funding provided by the state is expected to cover all planning & design costs, as well as 100% of the construction costs and the first year of maintenance costs.

Fall Cleanup Event

Saturday, November 8 is the cleanup event for Spring Park residents and businesses. Items must be bagged, boxed or bundled and at curbside by 7 a.m. Items not accepted for pick-up are recyclables, garbage, hazardous waste, building materials over one cubic yard, derelict vehicles or large auto parts, stumps, logs, concrete, rocks, railroad ties.

  Bull Horn Reminders~

Winter Trail Use

Winter is here and, as a reminder, the Dakota Trail through Spring Park is not maintained in the winter. The trail can still be used by people at their own risk but the trail will not be plowed or swept of snow and no salt or sand will be put on the trails if ice forms. Use Caution. No motorized vehicles are allowed on the Dakota Rail Trail. This includes ATV's and Snowmobiles.

Snow Events

It's that time of year again. Please make a note of the following:

  • Move your car off the street or from public parking during or immediately after a snowfall of two or more inches. You may return your vehicle to the street or parking lot after they have been completely plowed. If you are in doubt about how much snow has fallen, we encourage you to move your vehicle regardless to assist our plowing efforts.

  • When driving behind a snowplow, stay back at least four car lengths. Overspray from a snowplow can obstruct your vision while driving, creating a hazardous situation.

  • Keep children safe - do not allow them to play on snow banks next to the street.
