Singer-songwriter Callaghan stayed at Cavender Creek Cabins when performing at the Crimson Moon last Christmas. She opened the show for Georgia's own Shawn Mullins.

Callaghan's rich voice has earned comparisons with Sarah McLachlan and Norah Jones, and we're enjoying her CD here at Cavender Creek.

Check out the full month of events at Crimson Moon Cafe.

The vernal equinox marks the first day of spring. In 2011, the equinox occurs on March 20, right in the middle of the Northbound Thru Hiker kickoff season at Springer Mountain, the southern terminus of the Appalachian Trail.

The first annual Spring on Springer Dahlonega Trail Fest will be held on March 18-20, 2011 and celebrate Dahlonega's designation as an AT Trail Community by the Appalachian Trail Conservancy and Dahlonega's position as the southern gateway to the Appalachian Trail. The Trail Fest will include camping for hikers, speakers, films, music, shuttles to Springer Mountain and Amicalola Falls, equipment vendors, and workshops on such topics as safety, camping techniques, and equipment.

Fun trail related activities such as a 5k trail run, canoeing/kayaking, guided hikes, and local tours will be held as well as kid friendly outdoor activities.

The Trail Fest will be a fun filled weekend celebrating Dahlonega's Trail Community designation, the importance of the Appalachian Trail to Dahlonega and Lumpkin County, and the significance of Dahlonega to the many users of the AT. Speakers will include authors and well known hikers Gene Espy, Nimblewill Nomad, Paralee Dawson-Hayward, and Johnny Molloy.

Appalachian Trail Community

It's official! Dahlonega is now an Appalachian Trail Community

Dahlonega has received the designation of Appalachian Trail Community by the Appalachian Trail Conservancy. The Trail Fest will be a fun filled weekend celebrating Dahlonega's Trail Community designation, the importance of the Appalachian Trail to Dahlonega and Lumpkin County, and the significance of Dahlonega to the many users of the AT.

Designation as an Appalachian Trail Community™ and participation in the program is designed to:

  • thank communities for their decades of service to hikers,
  • to act as a catalyst for enhancing sustainable economic development,
  • engage community citizens as Trail visitors and stewards,
  • aid local municipalities and regional areas with conservation planning and
  • help local community members see the Trail as a resource and asset.

The program also serves to highlight and recognize those communities who are taking steps to ensure the ongoing protection of their natural, cultural and recreational resources, including the A.T. Preserving and enhancing a charming, memorable community destination will contribute to the long-term economic health of A.T. towns and make an A.T. hike even more desirable.

Southern Appalachians

The Trail runs between northeastern Tennessee and the southern terminus at Springer Mountain in Georgia. It penetrates several of the vast national forests of the South, and crosses the Trail's highest mountain, Clingman's Dome, in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Though mostly well-graded, the Trail through this section is remote, with long, strenuous climbs. The high ridges along the North Carolina-Tennessee border are prone to winter weather similar to parts of New England.
