Staff Highlight - Alyssa Parsons
Celia Kosinski
Program  Director

Alyssa Parsons, more commonly known as 'Parsons,' has joined Camp Hazen YMCA full time for the next 18 months!

Originally from Waragamba, Australia, Parsons works for YMCA Camp Yarramuni during the year and is lucky to get to enjoy summer camp all year round.

Parsons started out as a Land Sports counselor in our Overnight Camp program in 2014. She then continued on to be the Land Sports Director in 2015, and most recently one of the Girls Village Directors in 2016.

"Since my first year as a counselor, I couldn't imagine a summer without Hazen. I am so incredibly happy to be spending my next year and half at this amazing place!"  said Parsons.

Parsons will carry on her leadership role in the girl's village for the next two summers in addition to working as a program staff member in our fall, winter, and spring programs. This will include her work with school and community groups, Family Camp, as well as our Day and Overnight camper programs. Furthermore, Parsons will continue to learn all there is to know about Hazen by participating in conference events, camp trainings, and planning for the summer.

She is excited for this new and exciting challenge at Hazen, and for her first winter stateside!

"I can't wait to see camp during the winter, and filled with snow!"
Springtime at Hazen
Alex Learned
Senior Program Director

A month into Spring means things are in full swing at Hazen. April break brought over 200 campers to our Vacation Day program. Whether they came for just a day, the whole week, or anything between, everyone had a blast! Warm weather allowed us to fully enjoy the week outdoors. Highlights of program were the multiple days climbing on the Alpine Tower, Archery, Geocaching, and the semi-successful but undeniably fun Salamander Hunt!

Spring Camp Weekend was also incredibly fun. These campers included a big mix of returners and those coming to Hazen for the first time. A number of our campers can now assume the title of a "Four Season Hazen Camper" after attending summer camp as well as the Fall Reunion and Winter Camp. Highlights of Spring Camp include Night Gaga, the Giant Swing, and a Hazen campfire!

The Hazen Year-Round Staff also spent a part of April traveling to three other north-east YMCA Overnight camps, visiting YMCA Camp Takodah and YMCA Camp Coniston in New Hampshire, as well as YMCA Camp Chingachgook in New York. It was a great learning and sharing trip. We each came home bursting with ideas and full of energy as we head into summer.

As the rest of Spring unfolds, we look forward to our many schools and community groups joining us for their Adventure Programs, Environmental Education and Team Building retreats.

Alumni Work Day - May 21st
Alex Learned
Senior Program Director

Calling all Alumni! We are holding our Third Annual Alumni work day on Sunday, May 21st from 9am-4pm. Over the last two years this day has grown in numbers and the impact it has had on the summer preparations has been amazing! Whether you worked at Hazen last year or decades ago - all help is welcome! Projects for the day include setting up Onandaga tents, trail work, and clearing the overnight sites. We are looking for adults who are comfortable moving heavy objects and understand the amount of dirt they will be covered with at the end of the day! Lunch will be provided for all volunteers.

Email Alex at  alearned@camphazenymca.org if you're interested in helping out this year.
Upcoming Events

Next weekend is our Father and Son Weekend - May 5-7. Fathers and their sons can come enjoy a weekend of bonding at Hazen. There'll be climbing, boating, archery, and some Father and Son traditions such as our Annual Softball game and the Adventure Challenge.
Click here to register, or give us a call at (860) 526-9529

HEALTHY KIDS' DAY - 2-4pm Sunday, May 7th. Everyone is welcome to come join us for an afternoon of family fun. There is no charge for this event where families are encouraged to enjoy activities such as the climbing wall, canoeing or kayaking, archery, or spend some time at the carnival tent! Throughout the afternoon, families are also welcome to take a guided tour of the facility and learn more about our summer Day and Overnight Camps.

With less than two months until the first summer campers arrive, we simply cannot wait for another summer by the pines!

Sincerely,
