Greetings!

During the month of February professionals, recovered individuals, educators, parents, and even celebrities come together in an effort to raise awareness about the prevalence of eating disorders.  Over 20 million women and 10 million men suffer from eating disorders at some point in their lives, so the reality is "Everybody Knows Someone" as the national slogan suggests.  If each of us does just one thing - whether you sponsor an event, donate to the cause, place brochures in your local health club, or simply be more aware of your own "fat talk", together we can change the climate in which eating disorders continue to flourish.  Please see the links in this newsletter about events happening locally and nationally.  BE the change you want to see!
Blessings, Gail Hall

"I am Human" at GVSU
We are delighted that our collection of black and white photographs celebrating diversity in the human form will be featured at the Kirkhoff Center on GVSU's Allendale campus Feb. 27th, 10 am- 4 pm. If you missed our exhibit at ArtPrize, this is your chance to see them.  Gail Hall will provide remarks at noon on behalf of MiEDA.  Please come!

Updates from MiEDA

One of the goals of the The Michigan Eating Disorders Alliance is to increase eating disorder prevention efforts, especially in the schools.  We are very concerned that the current emphasis on childhood obesity prevention, through programs like mandatory BMI testing in elementary schools, will only create a backlash of more young children with eating disorders. Even well intentioned programs that encourage healthy eating habits can be harmful if they focus on weight loss as the primary goal.  To that end we've begun speaking out!  Dr. Lisa Lowery and Gail Hall presented jointly to the Grand Rapids Association of School Nurses on Jan. 28th.  Jennifer Lane and Jamie Vander Kolk, JD will be presenting a series of body image workshops to the students of Cassopolis High School on March 8th. (Lisa, Gail, Jennifer, and Jamie are all MiEDA board members, along with Carolyn Sutherby, LMSW).

Do you know what is happening in your school system with this issue?   Contact us if you would like more information, or to schedule a presentation at your child's school. You may do so by emailing Jennifer Lane.

Both our display at ArtPrize and the development of our speaker's bureau were made possible by the support of our donors.  If you would like to join us in this effort please follow this link:  Support MiEDA!

Are you interested in starting yoga?  Our class needs additional members - beginners as well as experienced individuals are welcome.  Although being in recovery from an eating disorder is not a requirement to participate, Dana, our yoga teacher extraordinaire, is uniquely gifted in her ability to customize her instruction for those with a current or past eating disorder.  The current class meets @ 6 pm Thursdays, and the cost is $15/session, discounted to $5 for students or others with financial hardship.  Call 957-7700 to register.

Sincerely,
